Taipei Taoyuan TPE: the complete layover guide

Two terminals joined by a free 2 minute Skytrain, lounges that take Priority Pass, free showers, and a 36 minute express into Taipei. Taoyuan might be the most layover friendly big hub in Asia.

Layover verdict Excellent at almost any length. Free recliners, free 24 hour showers and unlimited wifi make Taoyuan one of the friendliest major hubs in Asia for short connections and overnights alike.

Best lounge play Plaza Premium operates in both terminals and takes Priority Pass plus walk up paid entry. Rolling renovations run through June 2026, but at least one Plaza Premium lounge stays open in each terminal throughout.

The one thing to know Terminal changes are nearly free here. The airside Skytrain links T1 and T2 in about 2 minutes with no new security screening, so a connection that switches terminals is not the problem it would be at most hubs.

Orientation

How Taoyuan is laid out

Taoyuan is one of the easiest major hubs in Asia to learn. Two terminals, one free train between them, one rail line into the city, and a layout you can hold in your head after a single visit.

Terminal 2 is the EVA Air building; every EVA flight uses it, and China Airlines runs a large share of its schedule there too. Terminal 1, the original 1979 structure, is the main home of Starlux. Both China Airlines and Starlux split operations across the two terminals, so check your booking rather than assuming.

The Skytrain is the connective tissue. It is free, takes about 2 minutes, and runs as two separate lines: an airside shuttle linking the secure zones of both terminals, and a landside one connecting the public areas. Trains come every 2 to 6 minutes from roughly 05:00 to midnight; overnight there is an on call button on the platform that summons one. Because the airside line keeps you inside the secure zone, a terminal change at TPE means no new security screening.

Heading into the city, the Taoyuan Airport MRT runs from stations beneath both terminals. The purple express trains reach Taipei Main Station in about 36 minutes and leave every 15 minutes; the blue commuter trains stop everywhere and take closer to 50. First trains leave just before 06:00 and the last express rolls out around 23:00. For a layover dash, take the express and nothing else.

Timing honesty: on a single ticket, 90 minutes is comfortable even with a terminal change, because the change itself costs barely 15 minutes door to door. On separate tickets you are starting from zero at check in, so give yourself 3 hours.

With 6 hours or more and the right passport, a run into Taipei is genuinely realistic. Budget about 40 minutes each way plus immigration, and be back at security with 2 hours in hand. Under 6 hours, stay put.

Terminal by terminal

What each terminal gives you

Terminal 1

The original 1979 building, reworked since with a wave shaped roof and a calmer feel than its age suggests. Starlux is the marquee tenant and keeps its Galactic Lounge on level 4, business class and top tier COSMILE members only. For everyone else, Plaza Premium runs two lounges here, in Zone C and Zone D, both taking Priority Pass and selling entry at the door. Renovation note for 2026: Zone D closed from 3 March to 30 April, and Zone C takes its turn from 1 May to 30 June, so one of the pair is always open. Free 24 hour showers sit on level 4 of departures between the Plaza Premium and Starlux lounges, no lounge entry required.

Terminal 2

The bigger, newer building and the one most long haul travelers see. Every EVA Air departure leaves from here, and EVA runs four lounges of its own: The Garden, The Infinity, The Star and The Club. China Airlines bases most of its Terminal 2 operation in concourse D while EVA holds concourse C. Starlux opened a second, larger Galactic Lounge in T2, built with its North America flights in mind. Independent access comes through Plaza Premium and the Oriental Club Lounge, both on Priority Pass. T2 also holds the sleep hardware: the Plaza Premium Transit Hotel sits airside in the departure transit area with private rooms and 24 hour check in, and the CHO Stay capsule hotel sits landside on floor 5, which means clearing immigration to use it.

Terminal 3 north concourse

The first finished piece of the long delayed Terminal 3 project. The north concourse took trial passengers from 1 December 2025 and opened officially on 25 December 2025, handling around 40 flights a day in this first phase. The main terminal building and the south concourse remain under construction, with completion expected around 2027, to be confirmed. Which airlines end up where is also to be confirmed, so trust the gate on your boarding pass.

FAQ

Taoyuan layover questions

Can I sleep overnight at Taoyuan Airport?

Yes, and TPE handles this better than most hubs. Recliner style seats sit near many gate areas, free showers run 24 hours airside, and charging points are everywhere. For a real bed without clearing immigration, the Plaza Premium Transit Hotel sits airside in Terminal 2 with 24 hour check in.

How do I transfer between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at TPE?

Take the free Skytrain, which links the two terminals in about 2 minutes, with separate airside and landside lines. Trains run every 2 to 6 minutes from roughly 05:00 to midnight, and an on call button on the platform covers the night hours. Budget 15 minutes door to door.

Is wifi free at Taoyuan Airport?

Yes. Free unlimited wifi covers both terminals on the official airport network with no time limit. It holds up for video calls in most gate areas.

Can I leave the airport during a layover at TPE?

If you meet Taiwan entry requirements, yes. The Taoyuan Airport MRT express reaches Taipei Main Station in about 36 minutes and runs every 15 minutes until around 23:00. Many nationalities enter Taiwan visa free, but the rules depend on your passport; verify before travel.

How much connection time do I need at TPE?

On a single ticket, 90 minutes is comfortable even with a terminal change, since the Skytrain ride takes about 2 minutes and there is no new security screening airside. Official minimum connection times vary by airline and are to be confirmed with your carrier. On separate tickets, plan 3 hours.

Which terminal is EVA Air at Taoyuan Airport?

All EVA Air flights use Terminal 2. China Airlines and Starlux split their schedules across both terminals, so check your booking on the day. A wrong terminal mistake is cheap to fix here, about 2 minutes on the Skytrain.
