How Hong Kong International is laid out
Everything airside connects to everything else. Terminal 1, the Midfield Concourse, and the Satellite Concourse form one sterile zone, and you never clear immigration to change planes.
Terminal 1 is the main building, one of the largest in the world, with the Midfield Concourse holding gates 201 to 230 and the Satellite Concourse reached by the 200 meter Sky Bridge, the world's longest airside bridge, tall enough for an A380 to taxi underneath. There is a glass floor section where you can watch one do exactly that. The automated people mover covers the long hauls; allow 10 to 20 minutes to remote gates.
Terminal 2 reopened on May 27, 2026 after years of rebuilding, currently for departures only, with 15 airlines including HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines relocating their check in operations in batches through mid June 2026. Arrivals processing stays in Terminal 1 for now. The two terminals connect landside by air conditioned, step free walkways.
Transfers and timing
Transfers here are the gold standard. With bags checked through, follow the transfer signs, pass a transfer security screening, and walk or ride to your gate. No immigration, no visa for most nationalities, no terminal roulette. A 1 hour connection works when your inbound is on time; 90 minutes is comfortable even to the Midfield gates. A short list of nationalities needs a visa even for airside transit. Verify before travel.
Sleeping and resting, mostly free
HKG is the rare mega hub where an overnight costs nothing. The airport operates free resting lounges with reclined seating at 19 airside locations, on Level 6 near gates 1, 5, 6, 7, 24, 26, 33, the mid 40s and mid 60s gate ranges, plus four spots in the Midfield Concourse, and free shower facilities on top. The Plaza Premium East and West Hall lounges run 24 hours for paid entry, and Refreshhh by Aerotel sells showers and rest around the clock near gate 60. There is no hotel inside the secure area; the Regal Airport Hotel sits a 2 minute link bridge walk from Terminal 1 arrivals, landside. Our HKG sleeping guide maps the quietest rest zones.
Getting into the city
The Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in Central in about 24 minutes, 120 Hong Kong dollars with Octopus or contactless payment, 130 for a single journey ticket, with Kowloon and Tsing Yi stops on the way. Cityflyer A buses cost less and take 50 to 70 minutes. Most passport holders can enter Hong Kong visa free under normal visit rules, which makes a 6 to 8 hour layover enough for dim sum in Central or the Peak tram. Verify before travel.
How I would play it
With oneworld Emerald or a first class ticket, The Pier is a destination in itself, arrive early on purpose. Business passengers still have plenty of choice, though with The Wing Business closed until 2027 the remaining Cathay lounges run fuller than they used to. No status? Do not buy anything out of panic. The free resting lounges and showers cover a night here better than many paid lounges do elsewhere, and the 24 hour Plaza Premium halls are there if you want hot food and a quieter room. With 6 clear daytime hours, take the Airport Express in. Few cities reward a layover like Hong Kong, and a 24 minute train each way makes the round trip close to risk free.

HKG layover questions, answered
Do I need a visa to transit Hong Kong airport?
For most nationalities, no. HKG has genuine sterile transit: with bags checked through and an onward boarding pass you follow the transfer signs, pass a transfer security screening, and never clear Hong Kong immigration. A short list of nationalities needs a visa even for airside transit, so verify before travel.
Can I sleep for free at HKG overnight?
Yes, better than at almost any hub this size. The airport runs free resting lounges with reclined seating at 19 airside locations, including several in the Midfield Concourse, plus free showers. The terminal operates 24 hours and two Plaza Premium lounges sell rest around the clock if you want a door that closes.
Which terminal do I use at HKG now that Terminal 2 is open?
Terminal 2 reopened for departures on May 27, 2026, and 15 airlines including HK Express, Hong Kong Airlines, and Greater Bay Airlines are moving their check in there in batches through mid June 2026. Arrivals still come through Terminal 1. Check your airline's terminal before heading out, the allocation is still settling.
How do I get from HKG to Central and what does it cost?
The Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in Central in about 24 minutes, 120 Hong Kong dollars with Octopus or contactless, 130 for a single journey ticket. Cityflyer A buses are cheaper and slower. With 6 hours or more and an eligible passport, a city run is one of the best layover escapes in Asia.
What is the best lounge at Hong Kong airport?
Cathay Pacific's The Pier First Class Lounge near gate 63 is the perennial pick among the world's best lounges, and the renovated Wing First Class reopened in April 2026 with a new spa concept. Note The Wing Business is closed for renovation until around mid 2027. Without airline status, the 24 hour Plaza Premium lounges are the fallback.
How long do transfers take at HKG?
The whole airport is one connected airside zone, so transfers mean a security screening and a ride or walk, no immigration. The automated people mover and the Sky Bridge link Terminal 1, the Midfield Concourse, and the Satellite Concourse. Allow 10 to 20 minutes to remote gates. A 1 hour connection is workable when inbound is on time.
