Jakarta Soekarno Hatta CGK: the complete layover guide

Three terminals on a landside Skytrain, one terminal you actually want to be in, and capsule hotels that rent by the block. Here is how to spend a layover at CGK without losing your patience.

Layover verdict Fine for 3 to 6 hours if your flights keep you in Terminal 3, which has the lounges, the food and the capsule hotel. Layovers in T1 or T2 are duller, and any terminal change eats time because the only link is landside.

Best lounge play The Saphire Plaza Premium Lounge in Terminal 3 international takes Priority Pass, and a separate Saphire Lounge in Terminal 2F covers the old building. Neither will blow you away, but both beat the gate seating.

The one thing to know The free Kalayang Skytrain between terminals runs landside only, from roughly 06:00, with last train times that have varied since the 2025 service restart. Changing terminals after an international arrival means clearing immigration first, so check your visa situation before booking a split terminal connection.

Orientation

How Soekarno Hatta is laid out

CGK is Indonesia's main gateway, sitting in Tangerang west of central Jakarta, and it is really one excellent terminal carrying two older ones on its back.

Terminal 3 is the flagship: big, bright, and home to Garuda Indonesia plus most full service international carriers. Terminal 1 is the old domestic workhorse, split into subterminals A, B and C, where Lion Air runs much of its domestic operation. Terminal 2 splits into D, E and F and carries a mix of domestic and international traffic, with low cost international flights such as AirAsia using 2F. Terminal assignments here shift more often than at most hubs, so check your booking on the day.

The terminals sit far apart, linked by the Kalayang Skytrain, a free automated people mover stopping at T1, T2, T3 and the airport railway station. Trains pass about every 13 minutes from roughly 06:00; last train times have varied since the 2025 service restart, so confirm on the day if you land late. The ride is short, 5 to 7 minutes between adjacent stops, but the Skytrain is entirely landside. There is no airside corridor between buildings at CGK, which is the single most important thing to understand about connecting here.

What that means in practice: arrive on an international flight with a departure from a different terminal and you clear immigration, collect any bags not checked through, ride the Skytrain, and check in from zero. Budget 2 hours minimum, 3 if you land at a busy hour. Same terminal international connections in T3 are far gentler, since you can stay in the transit area without touching immigration. If you can route your trip to keep both flights in T3, do it.

Getting to the city is a genuine option on a longer layover. The KAI Bandara airport train leaves from the railway station on the Skytrain loop and reaches BNI City station in central Jakarta in about 46 minutes, departing roughly every 30 minutes. The road alternative is a Bluebird taxi or ride hailing car on the toll road, anywhere from 45 minutes to well over 90 in Jakarta traffic. For a city dash, take the train out and leave a fat buffer for the return; exact last train times are to be confirmed, so check the schedule before you commit.

Terminal by terminal

What each terminal gives you

Terminal 1

The original 1985 building, domestic only, organized into subterminals A, B and C with separate entrances and security. Lion Air dominates here. Facilities are basic, seating is hard, and there is little reason to linger. If you have hours to kill before a T1 departure, ride the free Skytrain to T3 and come back; the food alone justifies the trip.

Terminal 2

The middle child, split into D, E and F, handling a blend of domestic flights and low cost international services including AirAsia in 2F. It feels dated, but it quietly holds two of the most useful sleep options at the airport: the Jakarta Airport Hotel, a full service hotel inside the Terminal 2E building, and a PassGo Digital Airport Hotel capsule property. The Saphire Lounge in 2F takes Priority Pass, which makes a long wait here survivable.

Terminal 3

This is the terminal CGK wants you to judge it by, and fair enough. Opened in 2016, it hosts Garuda Indonesia's entire operation plus most full service foreign carriers. Garuda runs its own lounges here for premium passengers and eligible SkyTeam travelers, and the Saphire Plaza Premium Lounge on the international side near gate 5 sells access and takes Priority Pass. The PassGo Digital Airport Hotel capsules sit here too, bookable from 6 hour blocks, and T3 has the widest food spread at the airport by a distance. If your layover lives anywhere, it should live here.

FAQ

Soekarno Hatta layover questions

Can I sleep overnight at CGK?

Yes, and the paid options are better than at many bigger hubs. PassGo Digital Airport Hotel runs capsule properties in Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 with transit rates from 6 hour blocks, and the Jakarta Airport Hotel inside the Terminal 2E building sells full rooms. Free sleeping on terminal seating is possible but uncomfortable, especially in T1.

How do I transfer between terminals at CGK?

Take the free Kalayang Skytrain, which links T1, T2, T3 and the railway station about every 13 minutes from roughly 06:00, with last train times that have varied since the 2025 service restart. It runs landside only, so after an international arrival you clear immigration before you can ride it. Overnight alternatives are to be confirmed, so avoid a terminal change in the small hours.

Is wifi free at Soekarno Hatta?

Yes. Free wifi is available throughout the terminals on the official airport network. Speeds are generally fine for messaging and browsing, with T3 the most reliable building.

Can I leave the airport during a layover at CGK?

If you stay airside in the transit area for a same terminal connection, no visa is needed. To exit, many nationalities can enter Indonesia visa free or buy a visa on arrival, currently IDR 500,000 for citizens of about 97 countries. Rules and prices change, so verify before travel.

Which terminal is Garuda Indonesia at CGK?

Terminal 3, for both domestic and international flights. Most full service foreign airlines also use T3, while low cost international carriers such as AirAsia generally use Terminal 2F. Confirm your terminal on the day, because assignments at CGK do change.

How long does the train from CGK to Jakarta take?

The KAI Bandara airport train reaches BNI City station in central Jakarta in about 46 minutes, departing roughly every 30 minutes. Reach the railway station via the free Skytrain from any terminal. The train beats the toll road, where traffic can stretch the same journey past 90 minutes.
