Bali Ngurah Rai DPS: the complete layover guide

Two terminals side by side on a narrow strip of land between two beaches, a covered walkway linking them in about 10 minutes, a capsule hotel right inside the international building, and Kuta a 15 minute taxi away. Here is how to handle a layover at Bali without the guesswork.

Layover verdict Good for most layover lengths. The international terminal runs around the clock landside, paid lounge entry is easy to arrange, and a 5 hour gap is enough for a real meal in Kuta or even a swim, provided your passport qualifies for entry.

Best lounge play Priority Pass works at three rooms in the international terminal, Premier Lounge, Concordia Lounge and Flight Club DPS, and Premier sells walk in entry at the door with showers included.

The one thing to know International and domestic flights use separate buildings with no airside link. Switching between them means a landside walk of about 10 minutes plus a fresh pass through security, so treat any international to domestic connection as a 90 minute job minimum.

Orientation

How Bali Ngurah Rai is laid out

DPS is refreshingly simple: one international building, one domestic building, sitting next to each other at the southern pinch of the island where Bali narrows to a strip barely wider than the runway.

The International Terminal is the larger and newer of the two, built around a tall departures hall with carved Balinese gates and a long row of shops between check in and the piers. The Domestic Terminal next door handles the busy island hopping network, Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok, Labuan Bajo and the rest. Between the two buildings runs a covered walkway with travelators, lined with cafes and souvenir shops, and the walk takes about 10 minutes at a normal pace. A free shuttle covers the same ground if you would rather ride.

The catch is that the link is entirely landside. There is no airside corridor between international and domestic, so every connection that switches buildings means exiting, walking, and clearing security from scratch. On a single ticket with bags checked through, 90 minutes is a workable floor. On separate tickets you are collecting bags, walking them over, and checking in again, so give yourself 2.5 to 3 hours, and more if your inbound is a long haul arrival landing alongside three others.

Arriving internationally, most passports can use Indonesia's visa on arrival or the electronic version, the eVOA, which costs IDR 500,000 for 30 days and can be bought online before you fly so you can use the autogates instead of queuing at a counter. Rules and prices shift, so verify before travel. Immigration queues at DPS swing wildly with arrival banks; 20 minutes is common, an hour is not rare.

Heading into town is where Bali rewards a layover. Kuta is about 15 minutes by taxi, Seminyak 30 to 45 depending on traffic, and the traffic is the variable that decides everything here. Grab is the airport's official ride app partner with a marked pickup point a short walk from arrivals; metered Bluebird taxis and fixed price airport taxis also queue outside. Budget double the outbound time for the return leg in the late afternoon, because the road back past Kuta clogs badly between 4pm and 7pm.

Wifi is free in both terminals on the official airport network, with a quick browser registration. It is fine for messaging and maps, slower for video calls when the evening departure bank fills the piers. If you need reliable data, an Indonesian eSIM bought before arrival beats the terminal kiosks on price.

Terminal by terminal

What each terminal gives you

International Terminal

This is where layovers actually happen at DPS, and it is well equipped for them. Airside after immigration you get four lounges: Premier Lounge near gates 1 and 2 on the third floor, which takes Priority Pass and sells entry at the door with showers; Concordia Lounge, also on Priority Pass, open roughly 06:00 to 02:00; the newer Flight Club DPS, listed on Priority Pass with hours to be confirmed; and the Garuda Indonesia lounge near gate 2, reserved for business class and SkyTeam Elite Plus passengers and opening around the flight schedule. Landside, the building stays open 24 hours, and the PassGo Digital Airport Hotel sits on level 2 between arrivals and departures with more than 130 capsules sold in blocks from 6 hours. For a red eye gap, that capsule is the single most useful thing in the building.

Domestic Terminal

Smaller, busier per square meter, and far more functional than charming. The Concordia Lounge on the domestic side takes Priority Pass and runs daytime hours, roughly 05:00 to 23:00, and Garuda runs its own domestic lounge for premium passengers. Food options lean local and fast, which is honestly an upgrade on most international terminal food courts. Seating gets tight in the morning departure rush when half the archipelago seems to fly at once, so if you have a long wait here, claim a seat early or walk over to the international side where there is more room to spread out.

The walk between them

The covered walkway between the terminals doubles as the airport's main retail strip, and the Novotel Bali Ngurah Rai Airport opens directly onto it. The Novotel sells day use transit rooms by the block as well as overnight stays, with a pool and gym, which makes it the comfortable middle option between a capsule and leaving the airport entirely. Walking terminal to terminal takes about 10 minutes with luggage. The free shuttle exists, but unless it is pouring rain or you are hauling a surfboard bag, the walk is usually faster than waiting for it.

FAQ

Bali layover questions

Can I sleep overnight at Bali airport?

Yes, the landside areas of the International Terminal stay open 24 hours, though there are no dedicated rest zones and seating is limited. The realistic options are a capsule at the PassGo Digital Airport Hotel on level 2 of the International Terminal, or a room at the Novotel on the walkway between the terminals.

How do I transfer between the international and domestic terminals at DPS?

Walk the covered landside walkway, about 10 minutes with travelators, or take the free shuttle between the buildings. There is no airside link, so you clear security again at the next terminal. On separate tickets, collect your bags, walk them over and check in fresh, and allow at least 2.5 hours.

Is wifi free at Bali airport?

Yes, both terminals have free wifi on the official airport network after a quick browser registration. The network name has changed over the years, so check the signage at your gate. Speeds are fine for messaging but can sag during the evening departure rush.

Do I need a visa to leave the airport during a Bali layover?

Most nationalities can use Indonesia's visa on arrival or the online eVOA, which costs IDR 500,000 and grants 30 days. Buying the eVOA before you fly lets you use the autogates instead of the counter queue. Rules change, so verify before travel.

How long is the taxi to Kuta or Seminyak from DPS?

Kuta is about 15 minutes away and Seminyak takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Grab is the airport's official ride app partner with a marked pickup point near arrivals. Allow extra time for the return leg in late afternoon, when the roads around Kuta jam.

Which lounges at Bali airport take Priority Pass?

In the International Terminal, Premier Lounge, Concordia Lounge and Flight Club DPS are all on the Priority Pass network. On the domestic side, the Concordia Lounge takes Priority Pass as well. Premier and Concordia also sell entry at the door.
