Layover in Bali Ngurah Rai DPS: what to do hour by hour
Two terminals side by side on a narrow strip between two beaches, linked landside by a covered walkway of about 10 minutes, with a capsule hotel inside the international building and Kuta a 15 minute taxi away. DPS handles a layover well by day. The one thing that bites people is the terminal switch.

The weak point is any connection that crosses between the international and domestic buildings.

First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of DPS
Bali Ngurah Rai is two buildings next to each other at the southern pinch of the island, where Bali narrows to a strip barely wider than the runway. The International Terminal is the larger and newer one, built around a tall departures hall with carved Balinese gates and a long row of shops between check in and the piers. The Domestic Terminal next door handles the island hopping network to Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok, Labuan Bajo and the rest.
Between the two runs a covered walkway with travelators, lined with cafes and souvenir shops, and the walk takes about 10 minutes at a normal pace. A free shuttle covers the same ground if you would rather ride. The catch is that this link is entirely landside. There is no airside corridor between international and domestic, so every connection that switches buildings means exiting, walking, and clearing security from scratch.
Free wifi runs in both terminals on the official airport network after a quick browser registration. The network name has changed over the years, so check the signage at your gate. Speeds are fine for messaging and maps and sag during the evening departure bank, so an Indonesian eSIM bought before arrival is the better bet if you need reliable data.
Arriving internationally, most passports use Indonesia's visa on arrival or the electronic eVOA, which costs IDR 500,000 for 30 days and can be bought online before you fly so you clear at the autogates rather than a counter. Bali also charges a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor. Both are easy to handle, but immigration queues swing with the arrival banks: 20 minutes is common, an hour is not rare. Verify before travel.

3 hours
Stay in your terminal and eat well
Three hours is comfortable for an international to international connection and tight if you switch buildings. Staying airside in the international terminal, clear the transfer, then settle into Concordia Lounge or the Flight Club DPS restaurant, both on Priority Pass, for a meal and wifi. The shops between check in and the piers fill any gap.
If your second flight is domestic, treat 3 hours as workable but not relaxed. You exit, walk or ride to the domestic building, and pass security again, and the immigration queue on arrival is the variable that eats the buffer.
5 hours
Kuta and back, or a capsule reset
Five hours is the sweet spot. If your passport qualifies for entry, Kuta beach is about 15 minutes by taxi, which leaves time for a meal by the water or a swim before you head back. Clear immigration with a valid eVOA or visa on arrival, keep an eye on the afternoon traffic, and aim to be back at the airport two hours before departure.

8 hours
A real slice of south Bali
With 8 hours and the right documents, you can do more than Kuta. Seminyak is 30 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, and a beach club lunch or a spa hour is well within reach. Grab is the airport's official ride app partner with a marked pickup point a short walk from arrivals, and metered Bluebird taxis queue outside.
Budget double the outbound time for the return in the late afternoon, because the road back past Kuta clogs badly between 4pm and 7pm. Hold a valid eVOA or visa to leave, and remember the Bali tourist levy applies on entry. Verify before travel.
Overnight
The capsule is the answer, not a bench
The International Terminal stays open around the clock landside, but there are no dedicated rest zones and the seating is limited. For a red eye gap the PassGo Digital Airport Hotel inside the building is the single most useful thing here, with more than 130 capsules sold by the block.
If you want a proper room with a pool, the Novotel sits on the covered walkway between the terminals and sells day use transit rooms as well as overnight stays. Either beats trying to sleep across fixed seats.

The traffic is the thing that decides everything at DPS. The distances are short, but the road past Kuta turns to treacle in the late afternoon, so the same trip that took 15 minutes outbound can take 40 coming back. Plan the return around that peak, not the outbound time, and keep the two hour airport buffer as a floor. With under 4 hours, the lounges and a wander through the international shops are the calmer use of the time.
