Male Velana MLE: the complete layover guide
One island, one runway, a brand new international terminal, and a seaplane fleet that goes to bed at sunset. Here is how to handle a Velana layover without losing a night you did not plan for.
Layover verdict Good for 3 to 6 hour daytime layovers because Male city sits a genuine 10 minute ferry ride away for about USD 1, weaker airside, where lounge capacity is thin and the free seating fills early.
Best lounge play The Moonimaa Lounge in the domestic terminal takes Priority Pass and sells walk in entry at roughly USD 40. In Terminal 1 the new Koveli Lounge serves premium cabin passengers on eligible airlines; independent access there is to be confirmed.
The one thing to know Seaplanes fly in daylight only and Trans Maldivian check in closes around 3.30pm. Land later than midafternoon and your resort transfer waits until morning, so book the night at Hulhule Island Hotel or in Hulhumale before you fly, not at the transfer desk.

Orientation
How Velana is laid out
Velana is not an airport with a city attached. It is its own island, Hulhule, with the capital 10 minutes across the water and every resort reached by boat or seaplane from its shoreline.
The big change is recent. A new international terminal, now called Terminal 1, opened in phases from 26 July 2025 and took over all international flights by late October 2025. It has 47 check in counters, 12 air bridges and capacity for around 7 million passengers a year, a different world after decades of bus boarding from the cramped old building. The old terminal was renamed Terminal 2 and, since February 2026, handles domestic flights only.
The third piece is the seaplane terminal, a short drive from the main buildings, where Trans Maldivian Airways and Maldivian run the floatplane shuttles to resort atolls. If your booking includes a seaplane, the resort representative meets you in arrivals and handles the transfer between buildings.
Getting off the island is cheap and easy. The MTCC ferry to Male city runs roughly every 15 minutes from early morning until around midnight, takes about 10 minutes, and costs MVR 15 or USD 1. Taxis cross the Sinamale Bridge to Male in about 15 minutes; agree the fare before you get in. A shuttle bus links the airport with Hulhumale around the clock at roughly 30 minute intervals; most budget guesthouses sit there, 10 to 15 minutes away.
The constraint that shapes every Maldives itinerary: seaplanes fly in daylight only, roughly 6am to 5pm, and Trans Maldivian closes seaplane check in around 3.30pm. Arrive on an evening flight and your resort transfer happens the next morning, full stop. Speedboat transfers run later, but the seaplane rule catches thousands of travelers every season. If your inbound lands after midafternoon, treat an airport area overnight as part of the trip and book it in advance.
Timing honesty: international to domestic connections mean a short landside transfer, so 90 minutes is usually comfortable on one booking. On separate tickets, or with a seaplane leg, give yourself 2 to 3 hours and let the resort desk do the worrying.
Terminal by terminal
What each terminal gives you
Terminal 1, the new international terminal
All international arrivals and departures since late 2025. The building runs around 520 meters with 20 outbound immigration counters and far more seating than the old hall ever offered. The Koveli Lounge opened here in September 2025 with capacity for about 270 guests, serving business and first class passengers on eligible carriers including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Whether it accepts Priority Pass or paid entry is to be confirmed; check your lounge app before relying on it. Food and retail have grown with the building, though prices run high. No bar exists anywhere, airside or landside.
Terminal 2, the old international building
The original terminal now handles domestic flights to regional airports across the atolls. The Moonimaa Lounge sits here, landside before security, and it is the most accessible lounge at MLE: Priority Pass gets you in, walk in entry has been priced around USD 40, and stays are capped at 2 hours. It offers cold air, wifi and light refreshments rather than luxury, but here that counts for plenty. The Leeli Lounge, the Priority Pass option in the old international departures area, may not have survived the move to Terminal 1; its current status is to be confirmed.
The seaplane terminal
A separate complex where Trans Maldivian Airways, the largest seaplane operator anywhere, stages its fleet alongside Maldivian. Many upmarket resorts run their own lounges here, with showers, real food and a place to wait out the gap between landing and your floatplane slot. Access comes with the resort booking, not with any lounge card. If your resort offers a seaplane lounge, use it; the alternative is a warm bench with a view of the ramp.

FAQ
Velana layover questions
Can I sleep overnight at Male airport?
Travelers do stay overnight in the terminals, but free seating is limited and the buildings are not designed for it. The better play is Hulhule Island Hotel on the airport island itself, or a Hulhumale guesthouse about 15 minutes away by taxi. Both are routine overnight stops for seaplane connections.
Do I need a visa for a layover in the Maldives?
Most nationalities receive a free 30 day tourist visa on arrival, which covers leaving the airport during a layover. You also need to submit the online Traveller Declaration through the IMUGA portal within 96 hours of your flight. Rules change, so verify before travel.
How do I get from MLE to Male city?
The MTCC ferry takes about 10 minutes across the water, runs roughly every 15 minutes from early morning until around midnight, and costs MVR 15 or USD 1. Taxis cross the Sinamale Bridge in about 15 minutes. Both leave from just outside arrivals.
Why do seaplane transfers stop in the afternoon?
Seaplanes in the Maldives operate in daylight only, roughly 6am to 5pm, and Trans Maldivian closes seaplane check in around 3.30pm. Land later than midafternoon and your resort will book the transfer for the next morning, which is why so many itineraries include a night near the airport.
Is wifi free at Velana airport?
Yes, on the Airport WiFi network after an SMS code login, but sessions have been capped at about 25 minutes. Whether Terminal 1 keeps that limit is to be confirmed, so download anything important before you land.
Which terminal does my flight use at MLE?
All international flights use the new Terminal 1, which took over in phases between July and October 2025. Domestic flights use Terminal 2, the old international building. Seaplane transfers leave from a separate seaplane terminal complex a short drive from the main buildings.
