Layover in Male Velana MLE: what to do hour by hour
A new international Terminal 1, the capital a 10 minute ferry across the water for about a dollar, and a seaplane fleet that stops flying in the afternoon. Velana is an easy daytime layover and an awkward late night one, and the difference is the time on your boarding pass.

- Good by day, plan ahead by night. With 3 to 6 hours in daylight you can ride the MTCC ferry into Male city and back for about USD 1 each way. Airside is thinner: lounge capacity is limited, the free seating fills early, and there is no hotel inside the terminals, so a late arrival means booking a bed in advance.

- Connecting international to international, stay airside and use Terminal 1, where the new Koveli Lounge sells walk in entry at USD 83. Connecting to a domestic or seaplane flight to a resort, let the resort representative meet you in arrivals and handle the transfer between buildings, and give yourself 2 to 3 hours if the tickets are separate.

First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of MLE
Velana is not a city airport. It sits on its own island, Hulhule, with the capital Male 10 minutes away across the water and every resort reached by boat or seaplane from the same shoreline. That geography decides your layover more than any terminal map does.
The layout changed recently. A new international building, now called Terminal 1, opened in phases from 26 July 2025 and took over all international flights by late October 2025. It runs around 520 meters with 12 air bridges, far more seating than the old hall, and the new Koveli Lounge on the mezzanine. The old international terminal was renamed Terminal 2 and since February 2026 handles domestic flights to the atolls only. A separate seaplane complex, the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal, sits a short drive away.
Free wifi runs on the Airport WiFi network after an SMS login, but sessions have historically been capped at about 25 minutes and the current Terminal 1 allowance is to be confirmed, so download what you need before you land. Charging stations are available. One rule holds everywhere: there is no alcohol anywhere at the airport, airside or landside, because the Maldives bans it outside resort islands.
Connections are mostly short walks rather than long airside treks. International to domestic means clearing immigration, collecting your bags and passing customs in Terminal 1, then walking 3 to 5 minutes to Terminal 2 to recheck your bags at the domestic counters. The official minimum connection times are 45 minutes domestic, 90 minutes international, and 120 minutes interline, though a seaplane leg adds a transfer the clock does not show.

Connect, or a quick look across the water
Three hours covers an international connection comfortably and a domestic one with room to spare, given the 90 minute and 45 minute minimums. If both flights are international and you stay airside, Terminal 1 is the place to settle, with the Koveli Lounge and more seating than the old building ever had.
If you would rather see something, the MTCC ferry to Male city takes about 10 minutes and runs roughly every 15 minutes, so three hours is just enough for a fast loop to the capital and back. Clear immigration, keep an eye on the return ferry, and do not cut it fine, because there is no luggage storage to leave a bag behind.

Male city, properly this time
Five hours in daylight is the sweet spot for the capital. The ferry drops you near the waterfront, and central Male is walkable: the fish market, the artificial beach, the gold domed Grand Friday Mosque and the tangle of shops fit a couple of hours without a taxi. Carry small US dollars or rupees, since the run costs about USD 1.

A beach, a meal, or the airport island hotel
Eight daytime hours open up more than the capital. You can ferry to Male, eat a proper Maldivian lunch, and still be back with a buffer, or cross the Sinamale Bridge by taxi in about 15 minutes to Hulhumale, where the reclaimed island has a long public beach and budget guesthouses. Agree the taxi fare before you get in.
If the layover is mostly about resetting, the Hulhule Island Hotel sits 700 meters from the terminal on the airport island, with a free 24 hour shuttle and a daytime layover package. It is the one bed you can reach without a real journey.
Overnight
Book the bed before you fly
An overnight at Velana is a planning problem, not a benches problem. The terminals stay open but they are not built for sleeping, the free seating is limited, and there is no hotel inside either building. The clean answer is the Hulhule Island Hotel on the airport island, or a Hulhumale guesthouse 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi.
The reason so many Maldives itineraries include an airport night is the seaplane curfew. Land after midafternoon and your floatplane to the resort waits until morning, so the night near the airport is part of the trip. Book it in advance, not at the transfer desk.

The ferry is the cheap, reliable choice and the reason a Velana layover beats most island airports for a city run. The catch is timing on both ends: ferries thin out late in the evening, and there is no luggage storage at the airport, so anything you take into the city comes back with you. With under 3 hours, or after the last ferry, the terminal and a lounge are the better use of the time.
