Layover in Hanoi Noi Bai HAN: what to do hour by hour
Two terminals split by role, a free shuttle between them, lounges that hold the door open until 2am, and a city bus to the Old Quarter that costs less than a coffee. Noi Bai handles a layover well at almost any length, as long as you know which terminal you are in.

- Easy and improving. Both terminals stay open around the clock, the expanded Terminal 2 that opened in December 2025 took the squeeze out of the international peaks, and the lounge bench is deep for the region. The only structural catch is the terminal split: domestic and international do not connect airside, so a cross terminal connection means immigration, a shuttle and a fresh check in.

- Staying inside one terminal, a normal layover is relaxed: pick a lounge, eat, and wait. The international SH Premium Lounge near gate 28 in Terminal 2 serves pho made to order and stays open until about 2am. Crossing terminals, give yourself 2 hours on one ticket and 3 on separate ones.

First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of Noi Bai
Noi Bai keeps the logic simple. Terminal 1 handles every domestic flight, Terminal 2 handles every international one, and a free electric shuttle covers the short hop between the two buildings. Learn that split and the rest of the airport falls into place. There is no airside link, so the terminals behave like two separate airports joined by a bus.
Terminal 2 is the building most international travelers will see, and it changed substantially in late 2025. An expansion opened on 19 December 2025, lifting boarding gates from 17 to 30 and jet bridges from 14 to 27, and raising annual capacity from 10 million passengers to 15 million. It also brought self service check in kiosks, self bag drop and automated immigration lanes. Combined with Terminal 1, Noi Bai now moves about 30 million passengers a year, and the international peaks feel less cramped than they did before.
Between the terminals, a free electric shuttle runs from early morning until around 1am, departing every 10 to 15 minutes for a ride of 5 to 10 minutes. The transfer happens entirely landside. That matters for connections: arriving international and departing domestic means immigration, baggage claim, customs, the shuttle, and a fresh check in at Terminal 1. Free wifi runs in both terminals, and a tourist SIM from the Viettel, Vinaphone or MobiFone kiosks in arrivals is the more reliable option for heavy use.
The visa rule is the feature that defines a Noi Bai connection. Stay inside the Terminal 2 international transit area on a layover under 24 hours and you normally need no visa. Stay in your terminal and use a lounge
Three hours is comfortable inside a single terminal and tight across them. International to international inside Terminal 2 usually works at 90 minutes because you stay in the transit area, so a 3 hour window leaves real time for a lounge and a meal. Domestic to domestic inside Terminal 1 is relaxed at 60 minutes.
If your connection crosses terminals, treat 3 hours as the floor, not a cushion. You clear immigration, ride the shuttle and check in again, and a morning arrival wave can push immigration queues past an hour.
5 hours
A lounge, a shower and real pho
Five hours is the sweet spot to stay airside and eat well. In Terminal 2, the SH Premium Lounge near gate 28 is the Priority Pass door, with a staffed pho station, sushi, showers and massage, open from early morning until about 2am. The ACV Business Lounge between gates 30 and 31 is the biggest room, open 24 hours, with sleep pods and showers inside and walk up entry around 35 US dollars.
In Terminal 1, the SH Premium Lounge near gate 5 opens from about 4:30am for the first wave, and the ASG Sky Lounge is the budget pick with a walk up rate near 15 US dollars and, unusually, a small cinema.
8 hours
The Old Quarter is realistic, if you can clear immigration
With 8 hours and the right documents, central Hanoi is an easy run. The city sits about 27 km south, and bus 86 reaches the Old Quarter and Hanoi station for around 45,000 dong, under 2 US dollars, taking 50 to 70 minutes, from early morning until about 10pm. A Grab car costs roughly 250,000 to 390,000 dong and reaches the center in 30 to 45 minutes outside rush hour.
The catch is the visa. Leaving the airport means clearing immigration, so you need a visa exemption, an electronic visa or another valid Vietnamese visa, and you complete the online entry declaration first. Budget being back two hours before departure. Verify before travel.
Overnight
Both terminals stay open, and the pods help
Noi Bai stays open 24 hours landside and airside in both terminals, and overnight the security staff may ask to see a boarding pass, so keep yours handy. For a flat private bed, VATC sleep pods rent by the hour in both terminals. Airside in Terminal 2, a rest zone on the third floor near gate 36 has seating you can stretch out on.
Food thins out sharply after the late evening departures, so eat before midnight. The SH Premium Lounge holding the door open until about 2am is the best bridge into the small hours if you hold access.

The visa is the real gate on a city run, not the distance. If your nationality needs an electronic visa, sort it before you fly, because you cannot arrange it at the airport in time for a layover. With the paperwork done and 6 hours or more, the Old Quarter is a genuine option for a bowl of pho and a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. With less time, or without the visa sorted, the terminal lounges are the better use of the hours, and the SH Premium rooms carry a long wait comfortably.
