Doha Hamad (DOH): The Complete Layover Guide

How good is it? One of the best transit airports in the world. One terminal, no security between connections on most itineraries, a tropical garden, free quiet rooms, and a hotel inside the secure zone.

Best lounge option: Al Mourjan Business Lounge if your ticket or oneworld status opens it. Without status, the honest answer in 2026 is the free quiet rooms or a Sleepover pod, because Priority Pass no longer works here.

The one thing to know: the Al Maha lounges left Priority Pass on May 15, 2026. As of this review there is no Priority Pass lounge at DOH at all.

Orientation

How Hamad works

Hamad is what a transit hub looks like when it is designed as one. Every gate, lounge, shop, and bed sits inside a single secure zone, so a connection here is a walk, not an obstacle course.

The terminal fans out into five concourses. A and B flank the main check in hall with 10 gates each, C runs straight ahead with 24 gates and the Orchard at its far end, and the new D and E concourses opened in early 2025 to bring the total to 62 contact gates. Walking between concourses averages about 9 minutes, and the automated train linking the nodes takes roughly 90 seconds. Transfer passengers skip Qatari immigration entirely; carry on bags are screened at transfer points, and that is the whole process for most itineraries.

The Orchard deserves its reputation. It is a 6,000 square meter indoor garden under an 85 meter glass roof, with more than 300 trees, a pond, and most of the airport's best food around its edges. It sits at the North Node, about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from concourses A and B. If you have more than two hours here, that is where to spend them.

The published minimum connection time is 90 minutes for international transfers and 45 domestic, and unlike at many hubs the number is believable on a single ticket. On separate tickets, or when bags will not through check, treat 3 hours as the floor.

Leaving the airport

Doha in a few hours

Easier than almost any Gulf hub. The Doha Metro Red Line runs from the airport station to the Msheireb interchange in about 12 to 15 minutes for roughly 2 riyals, with Souq Waqif one Gold Line stop away. A taxi to the souq takes 15 to 20 minutes and costs around 50 to 70 riyals. Note the metro does not run all night and Friday service starts in the afternoon.

Qatar Airways passengers with at least 5 hours on the ground can take a free transit visa valid up to 96 hours, and citizens of more than 90 countries get visa free entry on arrival; verify before travel. The Discover Qatar transit tours were running as of June 2026, with a roughly 3 hour Doha coach tour departing through the day for layovers of 6 hours or more. With 6 to 8 hours overnight, though, the honest advice is different: the quiet rooms and the Oryx hotel make staying airside the more restful play.

Comfort

Lounges and rest, the short version

Qatar Airways runs the lounge show. Al Safwa First, the marble flagship, serves first class passengers around the clock, and business class ticket holders can occasionally buy their way in for about 600 riyals when capacity allows. Al Mourjan Business comes in two flavors: the original South lounge, a 10,000 square meter hall built for around a thousand people, and the newer Garden lounge near the Orchard. Both run 24 hours for business class and oneworld Emerald and Sapphire travelers, and economy passengers on Qatar Airways can sometimes buy entry for about 450 riyals through Manage My Booking, subject to availability. The three Al Maha lounges remain the pay per use option for everyone else, but since May 15, 2026 they no longer take Priority Pass, which removed the airport's only card entry route. The full current total of lounges is to be confirmed.

Rest is where Hamad quietly beats its rivals. The free quiet rooms with reclining seats cost nothing and are scattered through the concourses, though the airport does not publish a numbered map, so ask staff for the nearest one. The Sleepover pods, formerly branded Sleep 'n Fly, sit at the Duty Free Plaza South Node and near gates C30 and C31, from about 54 dollars a session with nap, single, double, and family cabins. The Oryx Airport Hotel at the South Plaza offers 100 rooms in 6, 12, or 24 hour blocks plus a 25 meter pool, gym, and spa, all without crossing immigration. Details and tactics live in our guide to sleeping at Doha Hamad (DOH).

FAQ

Doha layover questions

Can I sleep for free at Doha Hamad Airport?

Yes. The terminal runs 24 hours and free quiet rooms with reclining seats operate at several points in the concourses. Paid Sleepover pods and the airside Oryx Airport Hotel are the upgrades.

Does Priority Pass get me into a lounge at DOH?

No. The Al Maha lounges left the Priority Pass program on May 15, 2026, and as of June 2026 no lounge at Hamad accepts the card. Some Priority Pass experience credits may apply to the Sleepover pods; confirm with your issuer.

Is a 90 minute connection at Doha realistic?

On a single Qatar Airways ticket, yes. The published international minimum is 90 minutes, everything happens in one terminal, and the train between concourse nodes takes about 90 seconds. Separate tickets need 3 hours or more.

Do I need a visa to leave the airport in Doha?

Staying airside needs nothing. To exit, Qatar Airways passengers with layovers of 5 hours or more can get a free transit visa valid up to 96 hours, and citizens of 90+ countries get visa free entry on arrival. Verify before travel.

Is the Oryx Airport Hotel inside security?

Yes. It sits in the transit area next to the Lamp Bear sculpture, so you book a room in 6, 12, or 24 hour blocks without clearing immigration. There is a pool, gym, and spa attached.
