Layout
Terminals and getting around
Everything at AUH happens in Terminal A, the enormous X shaped building that replaced the old terminals in late 2023. All gates sit under one roof, connected airside, with departures on the upper levels and a central retail core where the four piers meet.
Walks are long but honest: the building is laid out so you can see where you are going, and travelators cover the pier spines. From the central core to the furthest gates allow 15 to 20 minutes. Signage is bilingual and generous, and the building rarely feels crowded outside the late night long haul bank, when half of Etihad's network connects at once.
Transit at AUH means one security screen between flights and no terminal changes, which is precisely what you want at 2am. Etihad built its schedule around connections here, and the airport handles them well. Minimum connection scenarios, including the US preclearance wrinkle, are in the AUH transit and connection guide. One US specific note: Abu Dhabi operates US customs preclearance, so flights to America clear US immigration before boarding. Add time for it.
Lounges
The lounge picture at AUH
The lounges run 24 hours, matching the airport's rhythm. Etihad operates its flagship rooms in Terminal A: a Business Lounge for premium cabin and status passengers and a First Lounge above it in the pecking order. Both are large, both are properly staffed overnight, and the Business Lounge dining is a real meal rather than a buffet apology.
The independent option is the Pearl Lounge on Level 5 near gate D43, operated by Plaza Premium. It runs around the clock, accepts Priority Pass and walk in paid entry, and caps stays around 3 hours. At peak overnight connection waves it fills up; arrive early in your layover rather than late.
If you have no lounge access at all, Terminal A is the rare airport where that is survivable: seating is plentiful and the quiet zones genuinely exist. Full hours, doors, and the access decoder are in the AUH lounge directory and the Priority Pass at AUH guide.
City escape
Leaving the airport: mosque first, city second
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the layover prize here: 15 to 20 minutes by taxi, free entry, and one of the most extraordinary buildings on earth. With 5 hours you can do it properly, including the dress code stop (abayas and covering are provided or required; dress modestly). Check prayer time closures before you go.
Downtown Abu Dhabi and the Corniche run 30 to 40 minutes by taxi depending on traffic; the public bus does the trip in about 45 minutes for pocket change. The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is feasible on a 7 hour layover. Most nationalities get visa free entry or visa on arrival in the UAE, but rules vary by passport, so verify before travel. Hour by hour plans live in the AUH layover guide.
Overnight
Sleeping at AUH
AUH is one of the better airports in the world to be stuck in overnight. The terminal never closes, and the AUHotel sits airside in the departure transit area with flexible 6, 12, and 24 hour packages: a bed and a shower without touching immigration. For long overnight connections it is worth every dirham, and it fills up, so book when your itinerary firms up.
Sleeping free is workable too. The terminal stays active all night because the connection banks never stop, but the ends of the piers away from the central core go quiet, and the seating includes stretches without armrests if you hunt. Air conditioning runs cold; pack a layer. Spots, pods, and prices are mapped in the sleeping at AUH guide.
Practical
Food, customs, and survival notes
Food in Terminal A spans the Gulf hub standard: international chains, Middle Eastern counters, and a handful of sit down restaurants around the central core, with enough open overnight to feed the 2am connection wave. Prices are airport prices, but water fountains exist; use them, because the dry air dehydrates you faster than you expect.
Free wifi on the Zayed Intl Airport Free Wi Fi network is fast and does not nag. Alcohol is served in lounges and licensed restaurants, unlike in Saudi airports, but public intoxication is taken seriously; pace yourself. Dress modestly in public areas. And a money note: taxis take cards, but small dirham notes make the mosque run smoother.
Plan your layover around the overnight wave. Etihad's network meets itself in the small hours, which means the terminal is livelier at 2am than at 2pm and the lounges and showers see their heaviest traffic before dawn. If you want the Pearl Lounge at its calmest, go mid morning or mid afternoon. If you are sleeping in the seats, claim your spot before the late evening arrivals land, because the best stretches near the pier ends go first and the wave does not break until sunrise.
FAQ
AUH layover questions
Which terminal does Abu Dhabi airport use now?
All flights operate from Terminal A, the large new terminal that opened in late 2023. The older terminals no longer handle scheduled passenger flights, so ignore any old gate advice that mentions Terminals 1 to 3.
Can I sleep at Abu Dhabi airport during a long transit?
Yes. Terminal A is open 24 hours and the AUHotel sits airside in the departure transit area with flexible stay packages, so you can sleep in a real bed without clearing immigration. Free seating overnight is workable but the terminal stays active all night.
Which lounges at AUH take Priority Pass?
The Pearl Lounge on Level 5 near gate D43 accepts Priority Pass, runs 24 hours, and caps stays at around 3 hours. Etihad's First and Business lounges serve eligible Etihad and partner premium passengers around the clock.
How far is Abu Dhabi city from the airport?
Downtown Abu Dhabi is roughly 30 to 40 minutes by taxi depending on traffic, and the public bus takes about 45 minutes. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque sits closer, about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi, which makes it the classic layover excursion.
Do I need a visa for a layover in Abu Dhabi?
Staying airside in transit requires no visa for most nationalities. Leaving the airport depends on your passport: many nationalities get visa free entry or visa on arrival, others need an eVisa arranged in advance. Verify before travel, rules change.
