Calgary International (YYC): The Complete Layover Guide

WestJet's home base: two terminals joined by a 620 metre airside corridor, four staffed lounges, free 24 hour rest zones, and a Marriott inside the building.

Layover verdict
Good, and friendlier than most Canadian hubs. Domestic and international connections stay airside, the free YYC Link shuttle covers the gap between terminals, and two free Quiet Space rest areas never close. The catch is the WestJet bank structure, which can pack the domestic concourses several times a day.
Best lounge option
The two Aspire lounges in Concourses D and E take Priority Pass and sell entry at 55 dollars plus tax. On the domestic side, the WestJet Elevation Lounge across from Concourse B is the standout room, with pay per use entry and a discounted rate for Priority Pass holders.
The one thing to know
Flying to the US? Concourse E runs US preclearance, and under a current congestion measure you can only enter transborder security and US customs two hours before departure. A long layover before a US flight gets spent outside Concourse E, not inside it.

Calgary International is really two airports joined at the hip. The domestic terminal, the older half, holds Concourses A, B and C: A is WestJet country for regional and domestic flying, B takes a mix of domestic carriers, and C belongs to Air Canada's domestic operation. The international terminal opened in 2016 and holds Concourses D and E, with D taking every international flight except the United States and E taking all US departures. The Calgary Airport Marriott In Terminal Hotel sits in the block that joins the two halves, which tells you how deliberately this airport was built for connections. YYC is WestJet's home base and biggest hub, so most connecting traffic here flows through WestJet banks.

The two terminals sit 620 metres apart, and the corridor between them runs airside. That distinction matters more than anything else on this page. A domestic to domestic, domestic to international or international to domestic departure connection never leaves the secure area: you either walk the corridor in roughly ten minutes or flag down a YYC Link shuttle, the free ten seat electric carts that ply the route for anyone on a tight connection. Arriving from abroad is the exception. You clear Canadian customs first, then return through security for the onward flight, so give an inbound international connection more buffer than the schedule suggests.

US flights work differently again. Concourse E runs US preclearance, meaning you clear American customs and immigration in Calgary and land stateside as a domestic arrival, free to walk straight off the plane to a connecting gate or the kerb. The trade is on the Calgary end: under a current congestion measure, access to transborder security and US customs opens only two hours before your departure. Plan a long layover before a US flight on the D side or in the domestic terminal, because Concourse E will not let you in early.

Security on the domestic side has been reorganized recently. The airport has consolidated its domestic checkpoints under a centralized passenger screening model, so if you knew the old layout, do not trust your mental map; follow the day's signage to the open checkpoint. Wifi, at least, asks nothing of you: it is free and unlimited throughout both terminals, airside and landside. Power outlets are widespread, and the airport's white hatted volunteer hosts are genuinely useful when the wayfinding fails you.

The lounge lineup runs four staffed rooms as of a June 2026 check of the airport's own directory. The Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge sits post security in Concourse C and keeps heroic hours, 4:00 am to 1:00 am daily. The WestJet Elevation Lounge, a 9,300 square foot flagship across from Concourse B, opens 5:00 am to 10:15 pm and sells pay per use entry with no membership needed. In the international terminal, the Aspire International Lounge sits among the D gates between Vin Room and Chili's, open 6:00 am to 8:30 pm, and the Aspire Lounge Transborder sits beside the Concourse E food court, open 4:30 am to 7:00 pm; both charge 55 dollars plus tax at the door and accept Priority Pass. Plaza Premium, which once operated here, no longer appears in the airport's directory.

Overnights at YYC are gentler than at most Canadian airports. The landside terminal never closes, and the two free YYC Quiet Space rest areas run 24 hours with loungers and even courtesy yoga equipment, one beside Gate A24 in the domestic terminal and one in the international terminal near the D and E pick up area. Airside thins out after the last departures around midnight, and overnighters report being left in peace by security. If you want an actual bed, the Marriott In Terminal Hotel puts 318 rooms a short indoor walk from either departures hall, no shuttle required.

Getting downtown is cheap and honest. Calgary Transit Route 300, the BRT Airport City Centre service, leaves from the domestic terminal and reaches downtown in about 35 to 40 minutes for the regular 4 dollar adult fare; the old airport surcharge was scrapped in 2023. Buses run roughly every half hour from about 5:30 am to 11:30 pm. A cab or rideshare covers the same trip in 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. With five hours or more, the ride into town for a walk along Stephen Avenue or the river path is a fair trade.

FAQ

Calgary YYC layover questions

Do I have to go through security again when connecting at YYC?

Not for domestic or outbound international connections, which all stay airside; the free YYC Link shuttle covers the 620 metre corridor between the two terminals. Arriving from abroad is different: you clear Canadian customs first, then return through security for your onward flight.

Does Calgary airport have a Priority Pass lounge?

Yes, two. The Aspire International Lounge in Concourse D and the Aspire Lounge Transborder in Concourse E both accept Priority Pass and sell walk up entry at 55 dollars plus tax. The WestJet Elevation Lounge on the domestic side gives Priority Pass holders a discounted rate rather than free entry.

Can you sleep overnight at YYC?

Yes, and it is one of the friendlier Canadian airports for it. The landside terminal stays open 24 hours and the two free YYC Quiet Space rest areas with loungers never close. For a real bed, the Calgary Airport Marriott In Terminal Hotel sits inside the building between the two terminals.

Does YYC have US preclearance?

Yes. Flights to the United States leave from Concourse E, where you clear US customs and immigration before boarding and land as a domestic arrival. Under a current congestion measure, access to transborder security and US customs opens two hours before departure, so you cannot wait out a long layover inside Concourse E.

How do I get from YYC to downtown Calgary?

Calgary Transit Route 300, the BRT to City Centre, runs from the domestic terminal in about 35 to 40 minutes for the regular 4 dollar adult fare, with the old airport surcharge scrapped in 2023. Buses run roughly every half hour from about 5:30 am to 11:30 pm.

How long does it take to get between the domestic and international terminals at YYC?

The airside connector corridor is 620 metres, a walk of roughly ten minutes, and the free YYC Link electric shuttles run the route for anyone with a tight connection. Both options stay inside the secure area, so connecting passengers never face a second screening.
