First, orient yourself

Calgary is one connected building with two named terminals and five concourses. The Domestic terminal holds Concourses A, B and C, and the International terminal, opened in 2016, holds Concourses D and E. Concourse D handles international flights that are not to the US, and Concourse E is the US Transborder wing, walled off airside because it is a US preclearance area.
The thing everyone remembers about YYC is the walk. A 620 metre walkway links the Domestic and International terminals, long enough that WestJet publicly adjusted schedules to add connection time. The fix is the free YYC Link shuttle, a fleet of small electric vehicles that run the corridor airside, so you ride rather than hike, which matters on a tight connection.
The terminal is open 24 hours and does not close, and there is a free 24 hour Quiet Space with loungers in both the Domestic and International areas. Free wifi runs on the YYC Free WiFi network with no registration. US preclearance at Concourse E operates 04:30 to 20:00, and a congestion rule means you can only access US screening up to 2 hours before your US departure.
For connections, domestic to international without US involvement can be as little as 45 minutes, just the walk or shuttle, while a US connection runs 60 minutes or more because of preclearance. An international arrival connecting onward means clearing Canadian customs and usually collecting and rechecking your bag, so allow about 90 minutes for that.

Connect, ride the shuttle, settle in
Three hours is comfortable for a domestic or international connection. The concourses connect airside, so the only obstacle is the long walk, which the free YYC Link shuttle handles. Once through, the Aspire lounges, the WestJet Elevation Lounge or the free Quiet Space are all within reach.
Connecting to the US, three hours is sensible. You clear preclearance at Concourse E, open 04:30 to 20:00, and you cannot access US screening more than 2 hours before departure, so time it accordingly.
5 hours
A lounge, a shower, or a free recliner
Five hours is the comfortable airside window. The two Aspire lounges take Priority Pass and sell a 55 dollar day pass with showers, the WestJet Elevation Lounge is pay per use, and if you would rather not pay, the free YYC Quiet Space beside Gate A24 has loungers and runs 24 hours.
Five hours is not quite enough for downtown once you count clearing customs both ways and the bus each way, so stay airside unless your window is longer.
8 hours
Downtown is realistic, Banff is not
With 8 hours and the right documents, downtown Calgary is an easy run. The Route 300 bus reaches the city centre in about 35 to 50 minutes for 3.60 dollars, and a taxi runs around 45 dollars. You clear Canadian immigration to leave, then rescreen on return, so budget being back 2 hours before departure.
Banff is the tempting trap. It is about an hour and a half each way by road, so a mountain run needs a very long layover, around 10 to 12 hours or more, once customs and the return buffer are counted. With 8 hours, downtown yes, Banff no.
Overnight
The Quiet Space, then a hotel if you can
Calgary is one of the friendlier North American airports for an overnight. It is open 24 hours, staff tolerate sleepers, and the free Quiet Space at Gate A24 has loungers, which beats the usual armrested benches. Whether the secure airside fully clears overnight is to be confirmed, so confirm with your airline for a long gap.
For real rest, the Calgary Airport Marriott and the Delta are both in terminal, landside, a short indoor walk from baggage claim.

The mistake at Calgary is underestimating Banff. The mountains are close by Canadian standards but still about 125 km and an hour and a half each way, so a Banff run only works on a very long layover with the customs steps counted in. For a normal long layover, downtown Calgary by the Route 300 bus is the realistic city option, and there is no direct train, so the bus or a taxi is the play.
