London Stansted (STN): The Complete Layover Guide
A budget machine under reconstruction. Stansted moves Ryanair and Jet2 passengers by the tens of thousands and offers them almost nothing in return: one lounge most flyers cannot reach, firm seating, and a famous 4am queue.
Layover qualityPoor for long stays. Fine for 2 to 3 hours, rough overnight, and the satellites are one way doors with thin food options.
Best loungeEssence by Escape in Satellite 1, the airport's only third party lounge since February 2026. Ryanair passengers cannot reach it.
One thing to knowOnce you head to your gate satellite you cannot come back to the main terminal. Buy food and water first.

How Stansted actually works
One big Foster designed shed with no gates in it. All boarding happens from three satellite buildings: Satellite 1 by walkway, Satellite 2 by the free airside transit train in about 7 minutes or a 10 minute walk, Satellite 3 by a walkway of about 15 minutes. The catch that defines this airport: the satellites are one way. Once you leave the main terminal for your gate, the shops, restaurants, and seating you just left are gone for good. A major terminal extension is under way, and the transit train is due to be replaced by walkways, timing to be confirmed.
Security and the morning crunch
One central security operation, and one brutal peak: the 5am to 9am departure bank, when Ryanair and Jet2 launch their morning waves. The airport claims most passengers clear in under 15 minutes; independent trackers report 20 to 40 minutes on holiday mornings. Security opens around 3am. Fast track from 6.49 pounds is the cheapest stress reduction this airport sells.
The lounge landscape
Brutally simple in 2026. The old Escape Lounge closed for good in February 2026 with the redevelopment. Its replacement, Essence by Escape, opened in March 2026 in Satellite 1: cold food only, walk up entry at 35 pounds, prebooking from about 26 pounds, Priority Pass and DragonPass accepted. Satellite 1 serves Jet2, Emirates, TUI, and others, but not Ryanair, so most of the airport's passengers cannot use it. An Emirates lounge operates for its own passengers, current status to be confirmed. Details in the STN lounge directory.
Sleeping at Stansted
The terminal is open all night and generations of budget travelers have slept here before dawn departures. It has become less friendly: reports say staff wake sleepers, floor sleeping is not allowed, and the seating fights you with armrests. A 24 hour Costa keeps the lights on landside. If the flight matters, the Radisson Blu is a 3 minute covered walk and the Hampton by Hilton about 200 meters. The honest survival plan is in the STN sleeping guide.
Getting to London
The Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street in about 48 minutes, every 15 minutes during the day, with advance fares from 9.90 pounds and notably higher walk up prices. National Express coaches run around the clock from about 7 to 12 pounds, taking 70 minutes or more depending on the M11. For a layover of under 7 hours, going into London is a gamble we would not take.
The small print that helps
The two hotels carry more weight here than at most airports, because the terminal gives you so little. The Radisson Blu, 3 minutes away under cover, keeps a 13 meter wine tower with about 4,000 bottles in its bar, which is a strange sentence to write about Stansted. The Hampton by Hilton, about 200 meters out, includes a free hot breakfast that beats anything in the satellites.
The wifi runs free for up to 4 hours, then asks for money, around 9 pounds for 24 hours, to be confirmed. On an overnight wait that means rationing. The 24 hour Costa landside is where the 3am crowd gathers, and it is the warmest seat in the building until security opens.
If Essence by Escape tempts you, read the access rules twice: it sits in Satellite 1, serves cold food only, and early reviews rate it barely above the gate seating. At 35 pounds walk up, our advice is to put the money toward the hotel breakfast instead.

STN layover questions
Can I sleep overnight at Stansted before an early flight?
The terminal stays open all night and thousands do it before the early departure bank, but it has become harder: staff reportedly wake sleepers, floor sleeping is not allowed, and the seating has armrests. A 24 hour Costa operates landside and security opens around 3am. The Radisson Blu and the Hampton by Hilton are both a short covered walk away.
Is there a lounge for Ryanair passengers at Stansted?
No. The only third party lounge, Essence by Escape, opened in March 2026 in Satellite 1, and Ryanair does not board from Satellite 1. Since the old Escape Lounge closed in February 2026, Ryanair passengers have no lounge option at this airport at all.
How early should I arrive for a 6am flight from Stansted?
Be in the security queue when it opens around 3am, or by 3:30am at the latest. The 5am to 9am departure bank is the airport's crunch: the airport claims most passengers clear in under 15 minutes, but third party trackers report 20 to 40 minute waits on busy mornings. Fast track from 6.49 pounds is cheap insurance.
How much is the Stansted Express and how long does it take?
About 48 minutes to London Liverpool Street, every 15 minutes during the day, with advance fares from 9.90 pounds booked early and higher walk up prices. National Express coaches run around the clock from about 7 to 12 pounds and take about 70 minutes or more depending on traffic.
Can I go back to the main terminal from the gates at Stansted?
No. Once you take the transit or walkway to your gate satellite, you cannot return to the main terminal shops and restaurants. Buy water and food before you head to the gate, especially in Satellites 2 and 3 where options are thin.
How do I get between gates and the terminal at Stansted?
Gates sit in three satellite buildings. Satellite 1 connects by walkway, Satellite 2 by the free airside transit train in about 7 minutes or a 10 minute walk, and Satellite 3 by a walkway of about 15 minutes. The transit system is due to be replaced by walkways during the terminal expansion, timing to be confirmed.
