How Sky Harbor is laid out
Sky Harbor calls itself America's Friendliest Airport, and for a hub of its size the geography backs the claim: two terminals, one free train, and downtown Phoenix about 3 miles to the west.
The terminal numbering confuses first timers. There is no Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 anymore; T2 closed in 2020 and was torn down, leaving Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 as the whole airport. T4 is the big one. American Airlines runs its Phoenix hub there, Southwest operates there too, and nearly every international carrier uses it, including British Airways, Air France, China Airlines, STARLUX, Aeromexico, Volaris and WestJet. T3 takes everyone else: Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Frontier, Hawaiian, Sun Country, Breeze, Allegiant, Air Canada and Porter all fly from its E and F gates.
Between the terminals runs the PHX Sky Train, a free driverless people mover that operates 24 hours a day with trains every few minutes. The full line links Terminal 4, Terminal 3, the 24th Street Station, the Rental Car Center, East Economy Parking and the 44th Street station where Valley Metro Rail stops. The critical detail for connections: the Sky Train stations sit landside, on Level 3 in T4 and Level 4 in T3. There is no airside route between the terminals at all. Change buildings and you will clear security again from the back of the line.
That makes the math simple. A connection inside one terminal is comfortable at 60 to 75 minutes, because once you are through a checkpoint you can reach every gate in that building. A connection that crosses terminals needs 90 minutes to feel calm, and on separate tickets with a checked bag you should treat 2.5 to 3 hours as the floor. The train ride itself takes only a few minutes; the security queue on the far side is the variable you cannot control.
Heading into the city is genuinely easy here. Ride the Sky Train to 44th Street, walk across to the Valley Metro Rail platform, and downtown Phoenix is about 17 minutes away. A single ride costs $2 and a day pass $4, and the train continues to Tempe and Mill Avenue if you have more time. One seasonal warning: from June through September, afternoon temperatures regularly pass 105 degrees Fahrenheit. A summer walk downtown sounds shorter than it feels. Plan indoor stops or go in the morning.

What each terminal gives you
Terminal 4
The Barry M. Goldwater Terminal handles the large majority of PHX traffic. Its gates spread across the A, B, C and D concourses, and the airside areas connect, so you can walk between concourses without rescreening once you are through any checkpoint. That matters because the lounges cluster unevenly. American operates three Admirals Club locations: above gates A7 and A9 with the longest hours at 5 am to 10 pm, between A19 and A21, and above B5 and B7, both of those running 6 am to 8 pm. The Centurion Lounge sits across from gate B21 and admits Amex Platinum and Centurion cardholders from 7 am to 8 pm. Directly opposite, across from B22, the Escape Lounge sells day entry and runs 5 am to 10 pm. Out by gate D11, the Sapphire Lounge by The Club serves Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders from 4:30 am to 10:30 pm. Military travelers get a USO pre security on the east end of Level 2.
Terminal 3
The John S. McCain III Terminal came out of a long renovation as the more pleasant building of the two: brighter, calmer, and easier to cross. Its E and F gates host Delta, United and the rest of the non American crowd. The lounge bench is short but well placed. The Delta Sky Club sits near gate F8 with long hours, 4:45 am to 12:30 am. The United Club near gate E3 runs 5 am to 11:30 pm. The one that matters for most travelers is the Escape Lounge on Level 4 at the intersection of the E and F gates, open 4:30 am to 10 pm, because it is the only PHX lounge that currently accepts Priority Pass. If your layover lives in T3 and you carry the pass, your afternoon is sorted.
The terminal change, honestly
Moving between T3 and T4 is painless as transport and annoying as process. Follow the Sky Train signs, ride one or two stops, then join the security queue at the other building. The whole move takes 30 to 45 minutes depending on checkpoint traffic, with early mornings the busiest window as the first departure bank loads up. If your itinerary mixes American with Delta or United, that ride is in your future, so do not book the tight connection that looks fine on paper.

Phoenix has begun planning a third terminal on the west side of the field, and officials have said the project could trigger a reshuffle of which airlines fly from which building. Timelines and the final airline map are to be confirmed, so verify your terminal close to your travel date if you are reading this far in the future.
