Layover in Okinawa Naha OKA: what to do hour by hour
One long terminal with a domestic wing and an international wing, a monorail that drops you on Kokusai dori in about 13 minutes, and a building that locks its doors overnight. By day Naha is one of the easiest layover airports in Japan. After the last flights it is one of the worst.

First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of OKA
Naha is one building stretched along the edge of the city. Domestic flights work out of the south wing, international flights out of the north wing, and a connecting building full of shops and restaurants joins the two halves. The domestic wing is the busy one, with ANA, JAL and Japan Transocean Air running dense schedules to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and the smaller Okinawan islands. The international wing is smaller and built for short haul Asia.
There is no airside link between the wings. If you arrive international and connect to a domestic flight, you clear immigration, collect any bags, walk through the connecting building for 5 to 10 minutes, check in again, and pass a fresh security screening. Domestic to domestic on a single ticket is far simpler, with 45 to 60 minutes comfortable inside the south wing. The one thing that bites is the morning security queue when the early Tokyo bank departs, so do not cut a connection to 30 minutes just because the airport looks small.
Free wifi runs on the NAHA Airport free wifi network across the public areas, and it handles browsing and messaging without a fuss. Check in sits on level 3 in the domestic wing and the gates on level 2, with a 4th floor restaurant level and Lounge Hana above that.
The feature that makes Naha a good layover airport is the city link. The Yui Rail monorail station connects to the domestic terminal by an upper level walkway, trains run roughly every 10 minutes from about 6:00 until around 23:30, and Kencho mae station at the foot of Kokusai dori takes about 13 minutes for 270 yen. The structural catch is the opposite of most big airports: Naha closes overnight, so a late arrival with an early connection means a bed in town, not a bench at the gate.

3 hours
Stay in the building and eat well
Three hours is comfortable for a domestic to domestic connection and tight for an international to domestic one, which needs the full landside transfer. If you are staying inside, the best landside time in the complex is Yuinichi Street in the connecting building, with a food court, sit down restaurants and shops selling beni imo tarts and awamori. It is a better wait than the gate seating.
If you would rather sit still, Lounge Hana on the 4th floor of the domestic wing is landside, open 8:00 to 20:00, and costs 1,320 yen at the door with soft drinks included. It moved upstairs in February 2026 and now has runway and ocean views.
5 hours
A monorail run into Naha is realistic
Five hours is enough to leave the airport, which is rare for a layover this length and the reason Naha rates well. Take the Yui Rail from the walkway above the domestic terminal to Kencho mae, about 13 minutes, walk the length of Kokusai dori, and eat Okinawa soba near the Makishi market two stops further along. Budget being back at security with an hour to spare and you still get a couple of hours in the city.
This only works if you are not collecting a checked bag and your documents allow it. International transit passengers who must clear immigration should check entry rules first. Verify before travel.

Shuri Castle or the beach, then back
With 8 hours the whole of central Naha opens up. The Yui Rail runs to Shuri at the top of the line for the castle grounds, or you can stay low for Kokusai dori, the Makishi public market and the side lanes of Heiwa dori. A day pass costs about 1,000 yen and pays for itself once you make three or more hops.
Keep the clock honest. Naha is compact but the monorail is not fast, so leave the city about 2 hours before departure, more if you have a bag to check or an international flight from the north wing.
Overnight
Book a bed, the terminal shuts
Naha is not a 24 hour airport. The domestic doors run roughly 6:00 to midnight and the international wing keeps shorter hours, historically about 6:00 to 22:00, so an overnight inside the building is not an option. A plan built around dozing in a quiet corner until a 7:00 departure will fail.

The reason a Naha layover beats most is that the monorail starts at the airport rather than a bus ride away, so the trip into Kokusai dori is short and predictable. The thing that eats the buffer is the closure, not the commute. If your gap runs into the night the city is still the right call, just as a hotel rather than a day trip. With under 4 hours, Yuinichi Street and a lounge use the time better than a rushed dash to town.
