Layover in Buenos Aires Ezeiza EZE: what to do hour by hour
One modern departures terminal under a long curved roof, every gate in one building, a thin but workable lounge bench, and a 35 km drive into Buenos Aires. Here is how to run an Ezeiza layover without surprises.

- Decent by day, hard overnight. Since 2023 every departure leaves from one new terminal with free wifi and real food, so a 3 to 6 hour daytime wait is comfortable. The seating, the cold and the noise all work against you after midnight, and there is no hotel inside any terminal.

- If you are connecting on one ticket through the departures terminal, you stay airside and the layover is easy. On separate tickets, or arriving to reconnect, you may clear immigration and recheck in from zero, so give that version 3 hours minimum and more if your inbound runs late.

- Buenos Aires has two airports. Ezeiza is the international field 35 km out of town; Aeroparque (AEP) sits downtown. A transfer between them is a full road journey of an hour or more, so never treat them as interchangeable. Verify entry rules before travel.
First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of EZE
Ezeiza changed shape in 2023. Every departure, domestic and international, now leaves from a single new terminal under a long curved roof that earned it a zeppelin nickname, while arrivals land in two older buildings next door. The departing version of EZE is the simplest it has ever been: check in happens in one hall, security and immigration feed one airside zone, and you can reach any gate without leaving the building. The gates fan out in three sectors labeled A, B and C.
Connecting is where it gets messier, because arrivals and departures live in different structures. If you land on an international flight with bags checked through, follow the transfer signage and your airline's instructions, since some connections route landside through immigration and the exact path depends on your carrier. On separate tickets you clear immigration, collect your bags, walk to the departures terminal and start check in from zero. The buildings sit close together and the walk between them takes a few minutes.
Free wifi covers the whole departures terminal on the Aeropuertos Argentina network, listed as free and unlimited, and it holds up for video calls. Power outlets exist but are spread unevenly, so claim a seat near one early on a long wait. Food runs from coffee chains to sit down restaurants, with most of the choice clustered in the central airside area rather than at the far gates, so eat before you walk out to sector C.
Central Buenos Aires is about 35 km away by road with no direct rail link to the terminal, so everything depends on highway traffic. That distance, plus the recheck in math for self connections, is what shapes how you should spend the hours below.

3 hours
Stay airside and use the terminal
Three hours is comfortable for a connection that keeps you airside in the departures terminal. Clear, find your sector, and spend the time on a lounge or a real meal in the central area before the gates thin your options. The duty free floor and the sit down restaurants are all clustered before the gate sectors spread out.
If your connection is a self transfer on separate tickets, three hours is the floor, not a cushion. You clear immigration, collect bags, walk to the departures terminal and check in again, so a late inbound can eat the whole window. Build more time if your arriving flight has a habit of running behind.
5 hours
A lounge and a slow meal
Five hours is the sweet spot to stay inside and use a lounge. The Ezeiza Lounge near Gate 23 takes Priority Pass without a time window, and the Star Alliance Lounge accepts the card only during a restricted window with a 3 hour cap. Capacity refusals are common across the board during the evening long haul departure bank, so walk over early and keep a plan B.
Without lounge access, the central airside area has the best food and the most seating, and the wifi is strong enough to work. Find a seat near an outlet, since power is spread unevenly through the building.
8 hours
The city is reachable, with caveats
With 8 hours and the right entry documents, central Buenos Aires is a realistic run, but the 35 km drive and traffic make it a commitment. The Tienda Leon bus runs roughly hourly from about 6am to 10pm to its Puerto Madero terminal at Avenida Madero 401, about 50 minutes in normal conditions, with online tickets cheaper than the counter. A taxi or remis from the official desks takes 45 minutes to over an hour, more in rush hour, and Uber and Cabify both operate.
You must meet Argentina entry requirements to leave, which depend on your nationality, so confirm yours first. Aim to be back two hours before departure, which still leaves a few hours in Puerto Madero or San Telmo. Verify before travel.
Overnight
Plan a capsule or a hotel
EZE stays open 24 hours and nobody will move you on, but it is one of the harder major airports for free sleep. Most seating carries fixed armrests, the buildings run cold at night, and cleaning crews and announcements keep the noise up.

The drive is the variable that ruins tight plans. Buenos Aires traffic is unpredictable and the highway has no rail backup, so a run that looks fine on paper can stretch well past an hour each way at the wrong time of day. Peso prices move too quickly to print here, so check fares on the day and pay by card or app where you can. With under 7 hours the terminal, a lounge and a meal is the safer use of the time.
