Tel Aviv Ben Gurion (TLV): The Complete Layover Guide

How good is it? Modern and efficient once you are through, but the security process owns your schedule, and the comfort options shrank in 2026. Plan around the airport, not in spite of it.

Best lounge option: with Priority Pass gone and the Dan Lounges closed, the Aspire Lounge in Concourse E for Star Alliance Gold and business class on most airlines other than EL AL, or the King David Lounge for EL AL premium passengers.

The one thing to know: arrive 3 hours early, every time. Security interviews happen before check in and the layered process is not something you can rush.

Orientation

How Ben Gurion works

TLV is built around its security process, and the sooner you accept that, the smoother everything goes. The airport itself is modern; the choreography around it is unique.

Terminal 3 is the main international terminal, with the train station on its lowest level and the famous inverted fountain in its departures rotunda. Terminal 1 historically serves budget carriers, but its status has shifted repeatedly; in 2026, after the airport's 40 day closure ended in April, operations have been consolidating and shifting, so confirm your terminal with your airline the week you fly. A free shuttle links the two terminals every 10 to 20 minutes.

Security here works in layers. You may be questioned before entering the terminal, you will be interviewed before check in, and your assigned screening level decides how long the rest takes. Questions cover who packed your bag, where you stayed, and who you know in Israel. It is professional and usually quick for straightforward itineraries, but the 3 hour arrival advice exists for a reason, and shoes stay on, which surprises Americans. Stamps from certain countries in your passport can mean longer questioning.

One more 2026 reality: some major Western carriers had not yet resumed TLV service as of this review, while EL AL, Arkia, and Israir operate. If your itinerary involves a codeshare, confirm who actually flies the metal.

Leaving the airport

Tel Aviv in a few hours

The train is the easy part. It leaves from under Terminal 3 and reaches Tel Aviv's stations in 15 to 20 minutes for 11.50 shekels, with 3 to 4 departures an hour in the daytime. The catch is the calendar: no trains from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening or on Jewish holidays. During those windows, shared sherut taxis run from outside arrivals, and private taxis cost roughly 130 to 200 shekels to the center, to be confirmed by meter.

Entry rules changed recently. Travelers from visa exempt countries need an ETA IL approved before travel, applied for at least 72 hours ahead. Staying airside on a connection under 24 hours generally does not require one. Verify before travel, and budget 6 to 7 hours of layover before attempting the city, because the return trip through TLV security is the full 3 hour experience.

Comfort

Lounges and rest, the short version

The lounge story at TLV turned over completely in 2026. The Dan Lounges in Terminal 3, long the Priority Pass standby, left the program and closed for good on December 31, 2025. The King David Lounge by concourse D belongs to EL AL's first and business passengers and top tier frequent flyers, with showers, a spa, massage chairs, and the best food airside. The Aspire Lounge in Concourse E now covers Star Alliance Gold and business class on most airlines other than EL AL, and the Jetex Lounge in Concourse C opened in May 2026 for Israeli issued Amex Platinum and Centurion cards. At the top end, the Fattal Terminal in T1's Masada Hall is a private terminal experience from roughly 470 dollars a person, with sleeping rooms at about 135 dollars per 3 hour block as an add on. Paid entry prices for the Aspire and Jetex lounges are to be confirmed; the full table lives in the lounge directory.

Sleeping free at Ben Gurion is a test of character. Nearly every bench has armrests, the lighting never softens, and security staff doing overnight rounds will want to see a boarding pass. There are no rest pods. If you need real sleep, the Sadot Hotel sits about 7 kilometers away in Be'er Ya'akov, 15 minutes by taxi with a complimentary airport shuttle and rooms from roughly 150 dollars, to be confirmed seasonally. FAQ

Ben Gurion layover questions

Does Priority Pass work at Tel Aviv Ben Gurion?

No. The Dan Lounges, the last Priority Pass lounges at TLV, closed permanently on December 31, 2025. As of 2026 no lounge at Ben Gurion accepts the card.

How early should I arrive at TLV for a departing flight?

Three hours before departure, for everyone. Security interviews happen before check in, and the process is layered and thorough. First visits to Israel, peak summer, and Jewish holidays all justify extra margin.

Is there a train from Ben Gurion to Tel Aviv, and does it run on Shabbat?

Trains run from under Terminal 3 to Tel Aviv in about 15 to 20 minutes for 11.50 shekels, but they stop completely from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening and on Jewish holidays. During Shabbat, shared sherut taxis and private taxis are the options.

Do I need an ETA IL for a layover at TLV?

If you stay airside and your connection is under 24 hours, generally no. To leave the airport, or for longer stays, visa exempt nationalities need an ETA IL approved before travel. Apply at least 72 hours ahead and verify current rules before travel.

Can I sleep overnight at Ben Gurion Airport?

You can, but it is one of the harder major airports for it. Most seats have armrests, lights stay bright, and security staff may ask to see your boarding pass. There is no hotel inside the terminal; the Sadot Hotel sits about 15 minutes away by taxi with an airport shuttle.
