First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of Tocumen
Tocumen sits about 24 kilometres east of downtown Panama City and runs as a two terminal complex. Terminal 1 is the original building, with gates in the 100 series and most of the smaller regional carriers. Terminal 2, opened in 2022 at the south end of the site, is the bigger half, home base for Copa Airlines and most departures to the United States and Europe, with gates in the 200 series. An indoor connector joins the two, so the airport behaves like one long building.
Copa runs Tocumen as its Hub of the Americas, and the rhythm of the place follows the airline's connecting banks. Several times a day, waves of aircraft arrive from across the region within an hour of each other, swap passengers, and push back again, with reported schedules describing around six waves daily. That is why Copa can sell transfers of 60 to 90 minutes, and why a gate area can swing from packed to nearly empty inside the same hour.
The transit flow is the airport's best feature. International to international connections stay airside: follow the Connections signage off the jet bridge and you reach your departure gate without clearing Panamanian immigration. For a terminal change, the airside corridor takes 10 to 20 minutes on foot, and an airside shuttle runs every 15 to 20 minutes from 5am to 9pm, stopping near gate 104 in Terminal 1 and gate 209 in Terminal 2.
Two things to plan around. Free wifi gives you one hour on the Airport_Tocumen network, then asks for payment from about 4 dollars an hour, so download what you need before you land. And most seating has fixed armrests with bright lighting and cold air conditioning, which makes a long sit less comfortable than the smooth connections suggest. A lounge solves both.

Spend the spare time in a lounge rather than a gate seat. In Terminal 2 the Copa Club by gate 208 and The Lounge near door 204 are the picks; Terminal 1 has its own Copa Club above gates 130 and 133. Eat here too, because late night food at PTY is thin.

A shower, a meal and a real sit down
Five hours is the comfortable airside window. The Copa Club in Terminal 2 holds around 400 seats with showers and a staffed bar and a 5 hour maximum stay, which fits this length almost exactly. Priority Pass works there and at The Lounge, and Star Alliance Gold members and Copa business passengers get in on status.
If you would rather pay than carry a card, The Lounge sells walk up entry at around 38 dollars and runs 24 hours, so it is the reliable choice at any hour. With armrests on most public seating, the lounge is genuinely the difference between resting and enduring here.
8 hours
Panama City is cheap and reachable
With 8 hours and your entry sorted, central Panama City is worth the trip and the transport is a bargain. Metro Line 2 has served the airport since 2023, and a full ride to the center with a transfer to Line 1 costs 0.85 dollars on a rechargeable metro card and takes 45 to 70 minutes. A licensed taxi runs 30 to 40 dollars in 25 to 45 minutes. Casco Viejo and the canal's Miraflores visitor center are the obvious targets for a half day.
Leaving the building means clearing Panamanian immigration, so the airside transit rule no longer applies. Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so verify before travel, and keep a wide buffer for the return through check in and security.
Overnight
A lounge that never closes, or a bed next door
Tocumen runs 24 hours and never fully empties, but it is not built for sleeping rough. Most gate seating has fixed armrests, the lighting stays bright, and there are no rest zones or quiet areas in either terminal. The honest overnight answer airside is The Lounge in Terminal 2, which never closes for pass holders.
For a real bed, the Crowne Plaza Panama Airport sits just beyond the grounds, a few minutes away, with a free shuttle that runs around the clock and serves both terminals. Reaching it means clearing immigration, so factor your entry status in. There is no hotel inside the terminals.
