Philadelphia International (PHL): The Complete Layover Guide

Seven terminal units in one long line, every one of them connected behind security: PHL is an easier connection than its reputation suggests, as long as you respect the walk.

Layover verdict
Good for daytime connections. The whole airport is walkable airside, wifi is free and unlimited, and American's hub operation keeps food and lounges open through the evening banks. Overnight is bleak once the checkpoints close.
Best lounge option
The American Flagship Lounge in Terminal A West between gates A15 and A16, if your ticket or status opens it. The Centurion Lounge near gate A14 is the strongest card option. Priority Pass holders get Minute Suites time rather than a classic lounge.
The one thing to know
You can walk from A West to Terminal F entirely airside without seeing another security line. The F end is a long haul on foot, so use the airside shuttle from gates A1, C16 or F10, running about every 10 minutes.

PHL runs in a single line along the airfield: A West, A East, then B through F. A West is the international terminal, with American's long haul flights plus British Airways, Aer Lingus, Lufthansa Group and Qatar Airways. A East, B and C are American's domestic territory. Terminal D holds Delta, United, Spirit and Alaska. Terminal E has Southwest and Frontier, and F is the regional terminal where American Eagle turboprops and small jets cycle through dozens of gates.

The single most useful fact about this airport: everything connects airside. Land at any gate and you can reach any other gate without clearing security again, including the bridge between E and F at the north side of gate E1. That puts PHL ahead of bigger hubs where a terminal change costs you a fresh screening line.

The catch is distance. End to end, A West to F is roughly a 25 to 30 minute walk. American runs an airside shuttle bus to cover it, stopping at gate A1 in A East, gate C16 at the B and C connector, and gate F10 at the Terminal F food court rotunda, about every 10 minutes with a ride of 5 to 7 minutes. If your connection involves F and you have under an hour, go straight to the nearest shuttle stop rather than gambling on the walk.

Security waits average around 17 minutes and rarely blow out the way they do at the megahubs, though the early morning bank can stretch things. Arriving international passengers clear immigration and customs at A West, recheck bags at the American desks immediately after the exit, then pass through a connector checkpoint back into the secure area. Allow 2 hours for an international to domestic connection; less than 90 minutes gets uncomfortable if your inbound is late or the baggage delivery is slow.

Domestic to domestic, the airport is forgiving. With every terminal connected airside, 45 to 60 minutes is enough for almost any gate pair, and the shuttle covers the worst case. The pinch point is Terminal F at peak regional banks, when the rotunda food court fills and gate areas get tight.

The building is in better shape than it has been in years. A 500 million dollar upgrade program wraps up through 2026 ahead of the World Cup summer: renovated restrooms across the terminals, new seating with power at most gates, new glass exit corridors, and a refreshed Terminal E front. Garage C is a construction site through fall 2026, which matters if someone is picking you up, not if you are connecting.

Overnight, PHL empties out. The terminal stays open and you will not be thrown out, but the checkpoints close after the last departures and reopen around 4:00 to 4:30 am, exact times to be confirmed. Most gate seating has fixed armrests. Terminal B is the quietest corner by reputation, Minute Suites at the A and B connector rents private rooms 24 hours a day from about 42 dollars an hour, and the Marriott across the Terminal B skybridge is the real bed option.

FAQ

Philadelphia PHL layover questions

Can I walk between all terminals at PHL without going through security again?

Yes. A West through F are fully connected behind security, including the bridge between Terminals E and F. For the long haul out to Terminal F, an airside shuttle runs about every 10 minutes from gates A1, C16 and F10.

How much connection time do I need at PHL?

Domestic to domestic, 45 to 60 minutes covers almost any gate pair since everything connects airside. Arriving from abroad, allow about 2 hours: you clear immigration and customs at A West, recheck bags at the American desks, then pass a connector checkpoint back into the secure area.

Does PHL have a Priority Pass lounge?

No classic lounge takes Priority Pass at PHL. The card gets you time credit at Minute Suites in the A and B connector, and limited entry to the Chase Sapphire Lounge at the D and E connector, with restrictions to be confirmed before you rely on it.

Can you sleep overnight at PHL?

The terminal stays open 24 hours but the checkpoints close overnight and reopen around 4:00 to 4:30 am, so plan on landside benches if you exit. Minute Suites rents private rooms airside around the clock, and the Airport Marriott connects to Terminal B by skybridge.

What is the fastest way from PHL to Center City Philadelphia?

The SEPTA Airport Line stops at each terminal and reaches Center City in about 20 to 25 minutes, every 30 minutes from roughly 5 am to midnight, for 8.75 dollars. The regulated taxi flat rate to Center City is 32 dollars and takes 15 to 25 minutes.
