Johannesburg O R Tambo Lounges (JNB): Every Lounge and How to Get In
O R Tambo runs around 14 lounges across its two terminals, and six of them open with a Priority Pass. Africa's busiest airport is one of the easiest places on the continent to find a sofa, a shower and a hot meal without flying business class.
- Lounge verdict
- Strong. Both terminals have multiple doors you can open without status, the international Bidvest Premier runs 24 hours, and the rebuilt SAA lounges in Terminal A are now genuinely good rooms.
- Best access play
- Priority Pass covers six doors: Bidvest Premier, Shongololo, Mashonzha and Aspire on the international side, plus Bidvest Premier and ORT Sky Lounge in domestic Terminal B. That is enough redundancy that a full lounge rarely ends your plan.
- The one thing to know
- International and domestic lounges sit behind separate security. A Terminal B lounge does you no good before an international flight, so pick from the table that matches your boarding pass.
Orientation
How the O R Tambo lounge map works
Two terminals, two separate lounge worlds. Terminal A handles international departures and holds the deep bench: the SAA flagship lounges up the escalator in the duty free area, four independent lounges spread along the concourse, and the British Airways and Emirates rooms tied to their evening departure banks. Terminal B handles domestic flights with a leaner set of four, all upstairs after security. There is no airside link between the two, so the lounge you can use is decided the moment you clear the matching security check.
Hours below were checked on 6 June 2026. Most doors open with the first wave around 04:30 and close between 21:00 and 23:00, which matters because JNB's long haul schedule is lopsided: the big arrivals land in the morning and the big departures leave at night. The Bidvest Premier in Terminal A is the exception, listed by Priority Pass as a 24 hour operation, and it carries the overnight crowd more or less alone. South Africa adds one quirk you will not see elsewhere: local bank cards from Discovery, Investec and FirstRand open more lounge doors here than most airline status does.
Terminal A
Terminal A international lounges
| Lounge | Location | Hours | Access | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAA Premium Lounge | Duty free area, up the escalator | 04:30 to 22:00 | SAA business class, Voyager Silver and above, Star Alliance Gold with one guest on a Star Alliance carrier, Discovery Bank Platinum, Black and Purple, Investec cards | Rebuilt with a show bar, focus booths and shower suites; the Star Alliance door at JNB |
| SAA Platinum Lounge | Duty free area, up the escalator | 04:30 to 22:00 | Voyager Platinum and Lifetime Platinum, Discovery Bank Purple, Investec Visa Infinite | Renovated and reopened March 2024; a la carte dining and the quietest seats in the terminal |
| SAA Arrivals Lounge | After customs control on the left, lift to the first level | 04:30 to 12:30 | Arriving SAA business class and Voyager Gold and above on SAA operated flights, select Discovery and Investec cards | Showers, clothes pressing and breakfast; a real reset after the overnight from Europe |
| Bidvest Premier Lounge | South end of the terminal, closest to gates A0 to A4 | 24 hours | Priority Pass; paid entry to be confirmed | Priority Pass Lounge of the Year 2026 for Middle East and Africa, and the only all night door at JNB |
| Shongololo Lounge | Near gates A7 to A18 | 06:00 to 23:00 | Priority Pass; paid entry to be confirmed | Big and worn in, tolerant of long stays; the workhorse of the independents |
| Mashonzha Lounge | International departures, Terminal A | 06:00 to 22:00 | Priority Pass | The newer, calmer alternative when Bidvest and Shongololo fill in the evening bank |
| Aspire Lounge | Duty free level, just before gate A7 | 10:00 to 22:00 | Priority Pass; maximum 4 hour stay | Day beds and a decent bar, but the late opening makes it useless for morning departures |
| British Airways Lounge | Mezzanine level, international departures | Around 16:00 to 22:00 | BA Club World and First, oneworld Emerald and Sapphire on oneworld flights | Refurbished with a separate first class dining section; opens only for the evening London bank |
| Emirates Lounge | Upstairs after immigration via the duty free area, turn left | 07:00 to 22:00 | Emirates premium cabins, Skywards Platinum and Gold with a guest, paid entry for Emirates economy passengers | Showers, proper dining and a separate smoking area; built around the Dubai departures |
| SLOW International | International departures, Terminal A | Listed as 24 hours by FNB, to be confirmed | FNB Premier, Private Clients, Private Wealth, Business Platinum and Black, RMB Private Bank | The best room at the airport if your bank qualifies; closed to everyone else |
The geography favors Priority Pass holders. Bidvest Premier anchors the south end near the A0 to A4 gates, Shongololo and Aspire sit along the A7 to A18 stretch, and Mashonzha rounds out a set of four doors no more than a few minutes apart. When one hits capacity during the evening long haul push, the next is a short walk, which is a luxury most African airports do not offer. The Bidvest is the one to plan around: it took the Priority Pass regional award for 2026 and it is the only lounge still serving at 2 am.
The SAA complex up the escalator is the surprise of the last two years. The carrier rebuilt its international lounges under the plain name The Lounge, with a Premium side for business class and Star Alliance Gold and a Platinum side for top tier Voyager members, and the result outclasses the old Baobab era rooms by a wide margin. Star Alliance Gold travelers on any alliance carrier get in with a guest, which makes it the obvious choice over the Priority Pass quartet if you hold the status.
Terminal B
Terminal B domestic lounges
| Lounge | Location | Hours | Access | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SAA Lounge Terminal B | Right after security, lift to the 3rd floor | 04:30 to 21:00 | SAA business class, Voyager Silver and above, Star Alliance Gold with one guest on a Star Alliance carrier, Discovery and Investec cards | Premium and Platinum sections in one footprint; due for refurbishment on the SAA schedule |
| Bidvest Premier Lounge | Domestic departures, Terminal B | 04:30 to 21:00 | Priority Pass; paid entry to be confirmed | The default domestic pick without a qualifying bank card; fills in the late afternoon peak |
| ORT Sky Lounge | Upper level, domestic departures | 04:30 to 21:00 | Priority Pass, Diners Club | Smaller than the Bidvest next on the list, and the natural overflow when it queues |
| SLOW Domestic | Domestic departures, Terminal B | To be confirmed | FNB Premier and above, RMB Private Bank; entry limited to 90 minutes before boarding, peak time restrictions Monday to Friday and Sunday 15:00 to 17:30 | The domestic prize for FirstRand clients, with rules tight enough to read twice |
Domestic lounge life at JNB is shorter and sharper than the international side. Everything closes by 21:00 and the security checkpoint itself shuts overnight, so a 6 am flight to Cape Town means arriving with the 04:30 opening wave, not before. The two Priority Pass doors carry most of the traffic, and the late afternoon business rush between Johannesburg and Cape Town is when both run out of seats. If you fly that corridor often, the 90 minute entry cap at SLOW tells you what the operators already know: demand outstrips space between 15:00 and 17:30 most weekdays.

What actually opens these doors
Priority Pass is the widest key at O R Tambo: Bidvest Premier, Shongololo, Mashonzha and Aspire in international Terminal A, plus Bidvest Premier and ORT Sky Lounge in domestic Terminal B. Entry is always subject to space, Aspire caps visits at 4 hours, and the evening international bank is when the doors start turning people away. The full strategy, including which door to try first at each hour of the day, lives in the JNB Priority Pass guide.
South African bank cards are the local cheat code. Discovery Bank Platinum, Black and Purple cardholders walk into the SAA lounges on any airline, Investec cardholders get the same with purchasable guest entry, and FirstRand clients through FNB Premier tiers or RMB Private Bank hold the only keys to the two SLOW lounges. If you bank in South Africa, check your card before buying any membership.
Alliance status and class of travel work the way you expect. Star Alliance Gold opens the SAA Premium lounges in both terminals with one guest when flying a Star Alliance carrier. oneworld Emerald and Sapphire open the British Airways lounge on oneworld flights, and Emirates Skywards Platinum and Gold open the Emirates Lounge with a guest.
Paying at the door exists but is the least dependable route. Emirates sells lounge entry to its own economy passengers, and the Bidvest and Shongololo lounges have sold direct entry in the past; current walk up prices and availability are to be confirmed, so treat a lounge program or the right card as the reliable plan and cash as the fallback.
DragonPass and Lounge Key listings at JNB shift often enough that printing them here would age badly. Check the current door list in your program app the week you fly rather than trusting any static list, including this one.
One structural note that decides everything: there is no airside path between international and domestic. Clear the security check that matches your boarding pass, then pick from that terminal's table. For the connection mechanics behind that rule, the JNB transit guide walks through it.

FAQ
O R Tambo lounge questions
Which JNB lounges take Priority Pass?
Six: the Bidvest Premier, Shongololo, Mashonzha and Aspire lounges in international Terminal A, plus the Bidvest Premier and ORT Sky Lounge in domestic Terminal B. The international Bidvest Premier runs 24 hours and won the Priority Pass regional award for 2026.
Is there a 24 hour lounge at O R Tambo?
Yes, one. Priority Pass lists the Bidvest Premier Lounge in international Terminal A as open around the clock. Every other lounge at JNB closes between 21:00 and 23:00, so the Bidvest is the only option for the small hours.
Which lounge do Star Alliance Gold members use at JNB?
The SAA Premium Lounge, up the escalator in the Terminal A duty free area for international flights, and the SAA Lounge on the 3rd floor of Terminal B for domestic. Star Alliance Gold members get in with one guest when travelling on a Star Alliance carrier, from 04:30 daily.
Can I pay to enter a lounge at JNB without flying business class?
Sometimes. Emirates sells entry to its lounge for its own economy passengers, and the Bidvest and Shongololo lounges have offered direct paid entry, though current prices are to be confirmed. A Priority Pass or a qualifying South African bank card is the dependable route.
Does O R Tambo have an arrivals lounge?
Yes. The SAA Arrivals Lounge sits just after customs control in Terminal A, open 04:30 to 12:30, with showers, clothes pressing and breakfast. Access is for arriving SAA business class passengers, Voyager Gold and above on SAA operated flights, and select Discovery and Investec cardholders.
