Istanbul Airport (IST): The Complete Layover Guide
One of the best layover airports in the world if you have lounge access or money to spend, and a long walk with hard benches if you have neither. Open 24 hours, transfers all under one roof.
Layover verdictVery good. Everything is airside in one enormous terminal, the airport never closes, and food, showers, and pods exist around the clock. Your legs and your wallet do the suffering.
Best lounge optionThe Turkish Airlines Business Lounge near gate E1 if you fly Turkish Airlines or Star Alliance business. For everyone else, the iGA Lounge: Priority Pass, DragonPass, or paid entry around EUR 115.
The one thing to knowDistances. Gate to gate walks run 10 to 25 minutes, and transfer security queues swell during the early morning and late evening flight banks. Treat anything under 90 minutes as a brisk connection.

How Istanbul Airport is laid out
There is exactly one passenger terminal, and it is one of the largest buildings in world aviation. You will never change terminals at IST. You will, however, walk.
Gates sit on piers lettered A to G, fanning out from a central core that holds the duty free hall, most of the food, and the lounges. The terminal splits into international and domestic sections rather than separate buildings. Overhead screens show walking time estimates to each gate, and they are honest: 10 minutes to a near gate, 25 to a far one. Wear in shoes, not new ones.
Transfers and timing
International to international transfers never leave the secure zone. Follow the transfer signs, pass a transfer security screening, and walk to your gate. Connections between domestic and international flights add passport control on top. The pinch point is transfer security during the big flight banks, early morning and late evening, when Turkish Airlines waves of arrivals all connect at once. Two hours is a comfortable connection here. One hour works only if both flights are on time and you move with purpose.
Since April 2025 the airport runs three runways with simultaneous independent operations, the first in Europe, which has cut the holding patterns that used to eat into tight connections. It has not made the building any smaller. A late inbound is an inconvenience here rather than a crisis, because the terminal, the food, the lounges, and the pods all keep running through the night, and the next wave of departures is never many hours away.
Getting into Istanbul
The M11 metro runs from inside the airport to Gayrettepe in roughly 30 to 37 minutes, with trains every 8 to 10 minutes from about 06:00 to midnight. Havaist buses run 24 hours to Taksim, Sultanahmet, and other districts, taking 60 to 90 minutes or more depending on traffic, which in Istanbul is a serious variable. Fares change quickly with Turkish inflation, so check prices on arrival. With 7 or more hours and an eligible passport, a run to the old city is realistic. Verify visa rules before travel.
Sleeping, showers, and the overnight reality
The terminal never closes, food and lounges operate around the clock, and nobody moves sleepers along. The free seating is the weak point: mostly benches with fixed armrests. The paid fixes work well. The iGA Sleepod area near the D gates has 44 pods charged by the hour, and YOTEL operates two sections, one landside near entrance 7 and one airside inside the international transit area, both bookable by the hour with a minimum of about 4 hours. Our IST sleeping guide maps the quieter corners if you are riding it out for free.
How I would play it
With Turkish Airlines or Star Alliance business class, go straight to the flagship lounge near gate E1 and stop reading. With Priority Pass, the iGA Lounge gives you 3 hours, so save it for the stretch right before boarding rather than burning it on arrival. No status and an overnight ahead? Price the airside YOTEL against the Sleepod pods before you settle for a bench: the pods charge by the hour, the hotel wants a 4 hour minimum, and both beat the armrests. Daytime with 7 hours or more and an eligible passport, take the metro in, the old city rewards even a short visit. Whatever the plan, recheck the walking time screens after any gate change. A move between far piers can quietly eat 20 minutes you thought you had.

IST layover questions, answered
Do I need a visa for a layover at Istanbul Airport?
For most nationalities, no visa is needed if you stay airside in the international transit zone on a single ticket with bags checked through. Since April 2024 Turkey requires an electronic airport transit visa for citizens of a small list of countries even for airside transit, and leaving the airport means entering Turkey under normal visa rules. Verify before travel.
Can I sleep overnight at IST?
Yes, the terminal operates 24 hours and you will not be thrown out. Free seating is mostly benches with armrests, so the realistic options are the iGA Sleepod pods near the D gates or an hourly cabin at YOTEL, which has both a landside section and an airside section in the international transit area.
How long do transfers take at Istanbul Airport?
International to international transfers stay airside: follow the transfer signs, pass transfer security screening, then walk. Gate to gate walks run about 10 to 25 minutes in this very large terminal, and transfer security queues get long during the early morning and late evening banks. A 1 hour connection is tight, 2 hours is comfortable.
Is wifi free at IST?
Yes. The iGA WiFi network is free and unlimited, but it requires registration, either an SMS code to a mobile number or a passport or boarding pass scan at the wifi kiosks in the terminal. The kiosks are the reliable route if your SIM does not receive Turkish SMS.
Which lounge can I use with Priority Pass at IST?
The iGA Lounge on the international departures level, with a 3 hour stay cap. Priority Pass also lists a Pop up Lounge by iGA opposite gate A5, hours to be confirmed. The Turkish Airlines lounges are reserved for Turkish Airlines and Star Alliance premium passengers and status holders.
Can I leave Istanbul Airport during a layover and see the city?
With about 7 hours or more, yes, if your nationality can enter Turkey. The M11 metro reaches Gayrettepe in roughly 30 to 37 minutes and Havaist buses run 24 hours to Taksim and Sultanahmet, though road traffic can stretch that to 90 minutes or more. Verify visa rules before travel.
