A new international terminal since June 2024, the older building next door now handling domestic flights, two airside lounges, capsule pods for the overnight crowd, and a city only 15 km away with the Tien Shan filling the horizon. ALA handles a layover well once you know the two terminal split.

First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of Almaty
Almaty International sits about 15 km northeast of the city center with the Tien Shan mountains along the southern horizon, and since 1 June 2024 it has run as a two building operation. The new Terminal 2 handles every international flight, while the older terminal next door, now Terminal 1, handles domestic. Terminal 2 was built from scratch by TAV Airports, bright and logically signed in Kazakh, Russian and English, and it lifted the airport well clear of the cramped old building it replaced.
Inside Terminal 2 the flow is simple. Check in spreads across the main hall, then passport control and security feed a single departure concourse with duty free and the gates. The lounges sit above the concourse: turn left after security for the Extime precinct on the mezzanine, or turn right for the lifts to the Air Astana Shanyraq Lounge on Level 2 opposite Gate 201. Walks are short by international hub standards, so a 90 minute international to international connection on one ticket is comfortable.
The part that needs planning is switching between international and domestic. Terminals 1 and 2 stand side by side, linked by an indoor landside walkway of about 5 minutes, but there is no airside connection. You exit one building's controlled area and clear security, and where relevant passport control, from scratch in the other. On a separate ticket from an international arrival to a domestic departure, treat 2 hours as the sensible floor, more with checked bags to collect and recheck.
Free wifi runs on the AIRPORT_Almaty network, but it needs an SMS code to log in. If your SIM cannot receive texts in Kazakhstan, buy a local SIM in arrivals or download what you need before you land, because the code is the one thing that trips up travelers at 2am.

Three hours is comfortable for an international to international connection on one ticket, where the walks in Terminal 2 are short and 90 minutes is enough once you are through. It is tighter if you switch to or from a domestic flight, because that means leaving Terminal 2, walking 5 minutes landside to Terminal 1, and clearing security again.
With the connection sorted, the Extime Business Lounge on the Terminal 2 mezzanine is the natural base. It runs 24 hours, takes DragonPass and LoungeKey, and sells walk in entry for 35,000 tenge, with showers for an extra 7,000 tenge if you want to freshen up.

A lounge meal, or a fast run into the city
Five hours splits two ways. Stay airside and the Extime lounge gives you a full buffet, a bar and a quiet seat, while Air Astana premium passengers have the Shanyraq Lounge opposite Gate 201 with Central Asian dishes and free showers. Both are open around the clock.
If you can enter Kazakhstan, five hours is enough for a quick city loop. A Yandex Go car reaches the center in 25 to 40 minutes, so the Green Bazaar and Panfilov Park are an easy run, and the food alone justifies the trip. Watch the clock on the way back, since the airport sits 15 km out.

Almaty is genuinely worth leaving for
With 8 hours and visa free entry sorted, central Almaty is an easy and rewarding run. A Yandex Go car, the app of choice in Kazakhstan, covers the roughly 15 km to the center in 25 to 40 minutes for a few thousand tenge, far less than the fares quoted by drivers in arrivals. Order in the app and walk past the touts. Bus 92 runs into the center along Abay Avenue in around 40 to 45 minutes for a small flat fare, cheapest with an Onay transport card. There is no rail link.
Kazakhstan grants visa free entry of up to 30 days to citizens of more than 50 countries, including the US, UK, EU members, Canada, Australia, Japan and South Korea, while Indian citizens get 14 days. Rules change and your nationality may differ, so verify before travel. The Green Bazaar, Panfilov Park and the mountain backdrop reward even a short visit.
Overnight
Open all night, with a capsule fix
Both terminals stay open 24 hours and the lounges never close, but the gate areas were not built for sleep: there are no designated rest zones, and most shops and restaurants shut overnight. The honest fix is a Caps Lock capsule hotel pod, available at the far ends of both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, with fresh linen, lockers and climate control from about 14,000 tenge for 3 hours up to 28,000 tenge for a 12 to 24 hour block.
If you would rather not pay for a pod, the Extime Business Lounge runs all night, though stays are typically capped at 3 hours. Remember the wifi needs an SMS code, so sort your connection before the small hours when the help desks are quiet.

The return is straightforward but not instant. Coming back you clear into Terminal 2, check in if you left on separate tickets, then pass security and passport control, and there is no fast track lane in the main terminal unless you buy an Extime VIP package. The Yandex Go car is the reliable way back from the city, since bus 92 adds time you may not have. With under 5 hours, the Extime lounge and the airside concourse are the better use of the time than a rushed dash into Almaty.
