Layover in Montreal Trudeau YUL: what to do hour by hour
One terminal with a sealed US preclearance wing, a 24 hour express bus into a great city, and the REM train still a year away. Here is what a YUL layover actually buys you.

Montreal Trudeau is a single integrated terminal split into three sectors: Domestic for flights within Canada, International for everywhere except the US and Canada, and Transborder for flights to the United States. A public zone sits before security. The Domestic and International sectors connect airside, so a Canada to international connection needs no rescreening, but the US Transborder sector is sealed off as a preclearance area.
US preclearance is the defining feature for a Montreal connection. If you are flying onward to the United States, you clear US border control and customs here before boarding and land in the US as a domestic arrival. Shower availability in the lounges is not confirmed, so if a wash matters, the in terminal Marriott is the dependable option.

Downtown by the 24 hour bus
With 6 hours or more and the right documents, downtown Montreal is realistic. The 747 express bus runs 24 hours a day for 11.25 dollars, which doubles as a 24 hour transit pass; the 747 to Lionel Groulx metro is the fast express at about 30 to 35 minutes, while the downtown route takes longer with more stops. A flat rate taxi is 49.45 dollars by day.
The REM train does not serve the airport yet, with the station targeted for 2027, so do not plan around it. You clear Canadian immigration to leave, hold a valid eTA or visa, then recheck in and rescreen to return. Verify before travel.
Overnight
Open and tolerated, but bring layers
Montreal is open overnight and airside passengers with a boarding pass can usually stay, but it is cold, bright and loud, with no nap pods. The landside check in area is the quietest free spot until about 3:30am, and International Departures has recliner seats airside.
For real rest, the in terminal Marriott is a short indoor walk from the concourse at the US Departures end. Call ahead about a day room for a partial night.

The single most common mistake at YUL right now is planning around the REM train, which is built but not yet open at the airport. Until the airport branch opens, targeted for 2027, the 24 hour 747 bus is the workhorse, and because the 11.25 dollar fare is a 24 hour pass it covers your return too. With under 5 hours, the lounges and the Marriott are the better use of the time than a round trip downtown.
