Layover in Koh Samui USM: what to do hour by hour
An open air airport that Bangkok Airways built and still owns, with garden walkways instead of corridors and trams instead of jet bridges. Gorgeous for a daytime wait, closed by night. Here is how to play a layover at Samui.

The open air pavilions, gardens and short walks make USM one of the most pleasant small airports anywhere, and connections are quick because everything sits close together. The hard limit is the night: the airport closes after the last flight, so there is no such thing as an overnight here.

First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of USM
Koh Samui does not look like an airport. It looks like a resort with a runway, because Bangkok Airways designed it that way in 1989 and has kept it that way since. The layout is a cluster of low, open sided pavilions with thatched style roofs, linked by garden walkways rather than enclosed corridors. The genuinely indoor spaces are limited to shops, ticket offices, toilets and the lounges. Most gate seating sits under cover but open to the island air, and when your flight boards an open sided tram drives you across the apron to the aircraft.
There are two zones, domestic and international, within easy walking distance of each other. Between and around them runs Samui Park Avenue, an open air strip of shops, cafes and restaurants that works more like a village street than an airport concourse. Walking times are measured in minutes, so a tight connection at USM is a far calmer event than the same connection in Bangkok.
Two practical realities follow from the open air design. Weather is part of the experience: warm breezes in the dry months, humidity and the occasional sideways shower in the rainy season from roughly October through December. And the airport keeps island hours, running about 6:00 am to 10:00 pm around the schedule and closing after the last departure. If your itinerary strands you here at midnight, the answer is a hotel, not a bench.
Wifi is available inside the lounges. Free terminal wide coverage is to be confirmed, so do not count on a reliable gate connection, and a Thai SIM or eSIM is the safer bet for data. Most layovers here are short Bangkok Airways connections through Suvarnabhumi, so the airport is built for quick turns rather than long waits.

Two hours is comfortable for almost any connection at USM, because the zones sit close together and the queues are short by big airport standards. Clear your transfer, then spend the time at the Blue Ribbon Club Lounge if you hold Priority Pass or fly Bangkok Airways premium, or at the free Courtesy Corner if you are a Bangkok Airways passenger in any cabin. The open gate pavilions beat a sealed concourse for waiting.

A massage, a meal, or a quick beach look
Four hours opens up the island a little. Samui Park Avenue carries enough cafes and restaurants for a proper meal, and Soul to Sole offers a traditional Thai massage before you fly. If you would rather see water, Chaweng beach is 10 to 15 minutes away by taxi and the north coast at Bangrak is even closer.
For a domestic to domestic connection you stay airside and skip the immigration step, so the calculation is simple. For an international gap, leaving means clearing Thai immigration, so check your entry status first.

Time for the island, not the airport
With 8 hours, the airport is the wrong place to spend the day. Chaweng with its beach and beach clubs is a short ride south, and a fixed price taxi runs about 500 baht while shared minivans sell seats for roughly 130 to 170 baht per person at the arrivals transport counter. A beach lunch and a swim fit comfortably inside the window.
Hold your entry documents if you are arriving internationally, and aim to be back 90 minutes before a domestic flight or 2 hours before an international one. The roads here are short, so the buffer is about check in and security, not distance.
Overnight
There is no overnight here
USM closes after the last flight, so an overnight inside the airport is not possible. If your connection breaks across the night, you leave and find a bed on the island. Nora Buri Resort and Spa runs a free airport shuttle, and Saboey Resort and Villas offers transfers on request, which makes either a low friction choice for a few hours of real sleep.
Come back for the morning reopening around 6:00 am. Trying to wait it out at a closed terminal is not an option, so book ahead rather than gambling on a late strand.

Samui is the rare airport where leaving is easier than staying entertained for long. The distances are tiny, the rides are cheap, and the beach is close enough that even a 3 hour gap can include sand. The one thing to respect is the document step on an international arrival, since you clear immigration to enter Thailand and again is not needed for a domestic transit. For a short domestic connection, staying airside in the open pavilions is the simplest plan.
