First, orient yourself
The 10 minute version of KRK
Krakow runs its whole passenger operation through one terminal at Balice, about 12 km west of the centre. Departures sit on the upper level, arrivals on the ground floor, and once past security the building splits into a larger Schengen zone and a smaller non Schengen zone behind passport control. The check in hall is a single long room, so you cannot really get lost.

If either leg is non Schengen, add buffer for the passport booths, and add more during the morning and evening Ryanair banks when security queues swell.

A lounge and a real meal, or a tight city dash
Five hours is the lounge sweet spot. The Business Lounge opposite Gate 2 takes Priority Pass and several other programs, or sells entry at the door for 260 PLN, with a self service bar, showers and a quieter upper floor. Use it for food and a reset rather than fighting for a free seat.
A city run is just about possible at 5 hours if you can enter the Schengen area, since the train is only 18 minutes each way, but it is tight once you add the walk to the station and the buffer back. Most travelers are happier staying put at this length.
8 hours
The Old Town is genuinely realistic
With 8 hours and Schengen entry rights, central Krakow is an easy run and one of the best airport to city links in Europe. A footbridge connects the terminal to the railway station, where Koleje Malopolskie trains reach Krakow Glowny beside the Old Town in 18 minutes, roughly every 30 minutes, for about 20 PLN.
That buys a few hours on the Main Square and a proper lunch with time to spare. Budget being back two hours before departure. Entry rules depend on your nationality, so verify before travel.
Overnight
Claim a chair early or walk to the Hilton
The terminal stays open to passengers 24 hours and security never closes, so nobody will move you on, but they will not feed you either. The lounge shuts by 23:30 at the latest, the restaurants close in the late evening, and the landside Nap Zone chairs near desks 1 to 8 are usually claimed by 9 or 10pm.

The footbridge to the station is the thing that makes this work. You walk a covered link from the terminal, board, and step off beside the Old Town 18 minutes later, no transfers and no traffic to gamble on. Bus 300 covers the same route more slowly and the 902 runs as the night bus, but for a layover the train both ways is the move. With under 4 hours, skip it and use the terminal, because the return adds a fresh security queue that can swell during the Ryanair peaks.
